reoccurring issue with Zip files

Recommended Posts

I have a user who keeps having the issue where he can’t see his Zip files

when trying to attach them to a message in Outlook.

This started happening about a year ago. I unregistered the following dlls

on his machine and this would fix the issue for a little while, then suddenly

it would come back and I’d have to unregister them again.

regsvr32 /u zipfldr.dll

regsvr32 /u cabview.dll

He is running Windows XP Professional with Service Pack 2 and all the latest

updates. Plus he has WinZip 11 installed.

I ended up re-imaging his machine (we use Ghost and he has the same image as

dozens of other users) and the problem went away for almost a year.

Suddenly yesterday it came back. I did the same thing as before,

unregistered the dlls.

He has not installed any new applications (he only uses Office 2003 and a

couple in-house apps that lots of other people use) I went through the steps

he takes to create his Zip files. Basically he selects the files he wants,

right clicks and chooses add to zip from the Winzip context menu.

Winzip is associated with all zip extensions and he is a local admin on his

machine.

The only other thing I know to try is switching to WinRar instead of WinZip.

But everyone here uses Winzip and it’s easier to keep them all on a standard.

Any ideas on why the machine would keep switching back to the XP compression

support, even after a fresh re-image and a year of working fine?

AC2006,

What does Winzip Support say about this issue?

Re: reoccurring issue with Zip files

I will contact them and find out. It seemed more of an OS issue, but I guess

WinZip could be spontaneously unregistering\de-associating itself.

Re: reoccurring issue with Zip files

Here is WinZip support's reply:

"It's a windows issue, as WinZip itself doesn't manipulate the DLL.

Please let me know if you have any further questions.

--Chuck Campbell, WinZip Technical Support"

I guess I'll just make a batch file for the user to run that unregisters the

DLLs when he has this issue.

Maybe he's using Send To; compressed zip file instead of Winzip's?
