diggerlee Posted January 12, 2010 Posted January 12, 2010 Hi. I'm running windows x.p. and have A.V.G. free installed, plus Super-anti spyware, but since I installed the latter, my p.c. has been taking an eternity to start up, ( 15-20 mins.) then a couple of days ago it froze on me, with an a.v.g. pop up box saying, " multiple threats" had been detected. I couldn't clear this pop up without re-booting the system, but it kept re-appearing, so I removed A.V.G. from my p.c. this cured the problem, & has also speeded up the p.c. But am I safe by just running Super-anti spyware??? any help PLEASE.... Quote
Match Posted January 12, 2010 Posted January 12, 2010 No in one word. personally getting rid of AVG 9 is probably the best thing you could have done, try one of the below Download FREE antivirus software - avast! Home Edition Avira AntiVir Personal - FREE Antivirus Quote
diggerlee Posted January 13, 2010 Author Posted January 13, 2010 Hi. Match, thanks for reply, as you can probably tell ! I'm a complete novice, however, I tried the "avast" link, & when installed, I couldn't get into outlook express, so I removed it again, am I doing something wrong? should I have removed Superanti -Spyware while running Avast? sorry to appear so stupid....thanks, Quote
RandyL Posted January 13, 2010 Posted January 13, 2010 Sorry to butt in Match but I'm wondering if he may have installed a suite instead of just the FREE Avast Antivirus. digerrlee did you uninstall AVG first? SAS is not an antivirus program like Avast or AVG. Running Avast and AVG would be a problem but not SAS as SAS is an anti-spyware program. To me it sounds like a firewall issue. diggerlee Posted January 13, 2010 Author Posted January 13, 2010 Hi. Randyl, thanks for info. I removed my A.V.G. a couple of days ago, and am now just running Superantispyware on it's own, am I right in assuming that this is NOT a firewall ? I will try the Avast again, if successful, do I need to run both programmes ? ( avast & S.A.S.) THANKS.... Quote
Match Posted January 13, 2010 Posted January 13, 2010 How did you remove AVG? with the windows uninstaller? or the AVG removal Tool? AVG Antivirus and Security Software - Tools download Personally I am not Familiar with SAS, but I just use AVAST, with ZoneAlarm pro Firewall, But I do know that their are people that keep SAS some have it running, others just use it for a weekly/monthly scan. The main reason I don't bother with a specific spyware application is that I regularly clean out my cookies folder, and Temp Internet folders and that Avast has a spyware application as well so using something like SAS would be just Overkill as I used to have it installed but only run it once or twice and it never found anything. muppet rebecca Posted January 13, 2010 Posted January 13, 2010 You could also try the avira free anti-virus...thats pretty good.... Before trying to install either one or the other you might want to check your firewall settings to see if thats what's blocking the program for installing on your computer. Start > control panel > security centre. If I remembered that correctly. Spyware only detects and removes things like tracking cookies which can be minor to things like dialers which you need antivirus to remove of the computer. Quote
diggerlee Posted January 13, 2010 Author Posted January 13, 2010 Hi. Match, I removed the A.V.G. with the windows uninstaller, & I just use S.A.S. for regular scans, the a.v.g. tools download you've given me, can run this & remove the S.A.S. ? many thanks...... Quote
Match Posted January 13, 2010 Posted January 13, 2010 Well ! I would advise that you keep SAS for now and use it to run scans, It is really good, at what it does. and don't hurt to have a backup. as I said in my previous post I regularly clean my cookies folder and temporary files folders, which is where most spyware will be found. AS for the AVG remover I have never personally used it, (That's not a good reference) but people I have suggested use it some have said that they had to re-install AVG first others have said it just removed files and folders left over that were causing conflicts with their new Antivirus. But I had to format my drive to remove a virus that AVG had allowed to infect my system. so it went with the format. and since then it would seem I am not the only one to suffer from AVG 9's floors. diggerlee Posted January 14, 2010 Author Posted January 14, 2010 Thanks for that Match, I don't intend to run A.V.G. in future... thanks again, diggerlee. Quote
