XP tries to install missing program

Hi,

after doing an XP recovery using the HP recovery partition, I thought it'd be a good idea to remove the packages I didn't use from HP, such as the DVD playing software. I dutifully uninstalled them via control panel, but couldn't remove them all, so I just deleted the files and folders they were contained in ( I KNOW....:mad:)

Now, whenever I turn it on it tries to re-install those HP packages and I can't figure out 1: Where it's getting the prompts to do so and 2: How to stop it!

 

I'd prefer not to do another recovery as I have the machine back to how I wanted it (before I deleted those pesky HP folders that is...!)

Have you tried to just let it install them and then uninstall them via control panel?

Sorry, I didn't make it clear. The installation calls for one of the files I deleted so it can't find them so won't install for me to uninstall.

Go to Start -> Run

 

Type: msconfig then enter

 

Go to the startup tab and list all the things thats has to to with HP.

System Restore now before it's too late. Otherwise you will need to reinstall from recovery to get it back to normal.

I get what you're trying to say, but doing a System Restore involves reinstalling from recovery anyway, so there's no difference, and as stated, I don't want to do that.

System Restore is done via system tools under accessories not always by system rerovery.

Hi, system restore is not a full recovery, all it does is take the system back to an earlier time. In this case back to before you tried to remove the HP installed goodies, which of course will be the point in time straight after the major recovery from the recovery partition.

 

That is the only way now to get those programs back. I know you don't want them, but you need to have all the files back so we can then help you to remove them correctly.

Otherwise it will mean going back into the recovery partition and starting again.
