Need Help Wiring an Optical Disk Drive and a SATA Harddrive

Hi, I have pretty much finished building my new computer but I'm having abit of trouble working out how to wire my disk drive and hardrive; unfortunately neither came with instructions and help websites are quite brief (first build/pc novice). I would just do some trial and error but I read that there are ways you can blow harddrives by wiring them wrong, so thought i'd get some help and do it right.

(sorry for poor quality/enormous pics, and I have no idea why it says 2005)

 

 

Extra info: I dont seem to have cables for the left and second to left socket on the disk drive; and I have SATA sockets on my mobo (does it matter which one I plug it into?)

the optical drive needs an IDE cable,do you have a connection that looks like it on your motherboard.

im sure i saw one in your pics,

the hard drive goes in SATA1,not a major thing if not,

the optical drive should have a jumper on the back set that to master,then plug the ide cable from the motherboard into the drive...the blue end of the IDE cable goes to the board.(be aware not always blue.)

what board do you have make n model.

Yes I have an IDE connection on the mobo; ok, hard drive in SATA1, got it.

 

Set the optical disk drive to master. I have x2 IDE ribbon cables, however neither has a blue end, one is BLACK+BLACK the other is RED+GREY+BLACK (3 on the latter), how do I tell which end to attatch to the board?

Some other questions regarding wiring:

 

1) I dont appear to have a cable coming from my PSU that will fit into the PWR FAN connection on my mobo, does the fan on my PSU not need this power source? (https://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CA-004-CS)

 

2) I can't find the audio cable that should, I believe, fit into the connection on the disk drive, what should this have come with? I also can't see a 'sound card cd-in socket' on my mobo, could this be marked as something else or dont I have one with this mobo?

 

3) I have a 6-pin cable coming from my PSU that appears to have no use; is this a problem? Is it meant for the graphics card?

 

4) In the 'Important Tips and Techniques' section of my graphics cards manual it says that a 'good connection' would be one in-which both PCI-E 6-pin power cables are individually attatched to the card, however I only seem to have one 4-pin connection on the card. Is this a problem? I'm guessing not, just wanted to check.

 

5) My front audio plugs were not marked 'Ret R' 'R Out', simply x2 'R out' and x2 'L out'. Not really knowing how to connect them I have done them like this: 1-mic In, 2-ground, 3-mic pwr, 4 -..., 5-R out, 6-R out, 7..., 9-L out, 10-L out. Remembering some GCSE physics I placed the plugs that I thought might be out (the first one of the two attatched that broke away from the wire) in 5 and 9, will this function?

 

P.S. My graphics card is an Nvidia Geforce 8800GTS

the fan on the psu uses the source from the transformer inside the psu so no need for additional power.

the IDE cable has a long length then where the connector is it shortens http://www.eutronix.com/IDE_cable1.jpg so as in the picture,the connection on the longest end goes to the motherboard, then the next to the drive.as for the cd audio,the 3 pin cable is only used for anologue audio, like from windows cd player (not media player).if you dont need the analogue then dont worry about this connection, the audio will come from the IDE as digital.

six pin connection is mainly used for graphics card power. the Nvidia Geforce 8800GTS has 2 connectors so a converter is needed a 1 to 2 y cable.4
