corrupted NTFS

Hi all,

first of all, sorry but English is not my first language.

I have a SBS 2003 running for more than 1 year now without any particular

problem.

2 weeks ago, I encountered some corrupted files on one of the partitions

(425GB, 200GB used).

The file system was so corrupted that chkdsk was aborting without any error

message.

Finally I reformated the partition and started to restore the files but the

NTFS corruption was back (during the restore process). For testing purpose,

I deleted the partition and splitted it in 2 (200GB and 225GB). I can copy

or restore files without any problem on the first partition but on the

second one I still have trouble. A Chkdsk on the newly formatted parttion

gives me a lot of errors. Or chkdsk tells me that the partition is RAW.

What is very strange is, that this partition is on a RAID-5 volume (with all

the 3 other partitions), there is no RAID error (Intel SRCS16) and no NTFS

errors on the other partitions. Except that, all is running well (Exchange,

Sharepoint, VPN, etc.) and the RAM is OK.

I have no clue, so any help will be very appreciated.

Thank you,

Jean-Philippe

Hi - your English is fine. However, as SBS is a tightly-integrated system

and tends to do things differently, I suggest you post your future SBS

questions in microsoft.public.windows.server.sbs. I'm setting up my reply to

crosspost to that group now.

I haven't heard of it happening with the particular RAID controller you are

using but it's a (thankfully relatively rare) probability that the RAID

array is experiencing a particular form of error. Can't think, off the top

of m' head, what the error is described as.

IF this is what is occurring, and it seems likely, you need to completely

delete and recreate the array.

PS. Yes, I only picked up on this because LW brought it to the SBS group.

The question is a more general Q but we tend to have a fast turnaround here,

if it involves SBS this is the place to be.

PPS. Your English is better than my Biddleonian.

Can you give some details about your RAID card, and whether it has the

latest firmware applied?

I had a similar issue and found it to be related to two issues, and

ended up breaking the array, low level format each drive on a

different card, which showed on drive was bad, and then updated the

RAID card firmware. The issue was fixed afterwards (INTEL card).

Re: corrupted NTFS

Sorry for the delay, I was away for the week-end.

The Intel Raid Controler has the firmware 713N, which seems to be 3 versions

old.

So I have to flash it and test the disks one by one. Do I really need to

delete the array ?

Thank you for the help.
