Moved files "in limbo"

A phenomena has just started happening on my computer. I'm using XP

home SP2.

I moved some jpg files from disk D to disk E. They are partitions on

separate HDs.

The thumbnail stays in D. In E I get the name of the file but no

thumbnail. I can't open the file in D or E. I get a message to the

effect that the file is already open or being used.

I can't closed down the computer normally. I get a warning that these

files are being used and must close them before shutting down.

The only way is to force a reboot with the button.

A precision on the problem:

When I reboot I have the file intact in E and D with thumbnails for

both. So windows has blocked on the move but carried out a copy.
