Java advice needed.

Recommended Posts

Yes, I am still moving into my new computer (Windows XP). Today, while

visiting a Web sites that I like view, I was confronted with a need to

have Java software loaded on my system. The site I visited was:

http://www.fs.fed.us/gpnf/volcanocams/msh/

Subsequently, I found Java software at the following web sites:

http://www.java.com/en/

https://cds.sun.com/is-bin/INTERSHOP.enfinity/WFS/CDS-CDS_Developer-Site/en_US/-/USD/ViewProductDetail-Start?ProductRef=jre-6u4-b-oth-JPR@CDS-CDS_Developer

Mow to my questions.

Is Java software the same? If not, is one version better to use on a

Windows XP machine than another? I seem to remember faintly that Java

software can open the door for computer problems...is this true? I am

looking for a suggestion as to what I should use on my new system.

Thanks in advance for any help/suggestions sent my way on this subject.

Just about *any* software can "...open the door for computer problems".

You want "Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 4" found in the middle of the following

web page.

http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp

The second link you gave leads to this webpage :

https://cds.sun.com/is-bin/INTERSHOP.enfinity/WFS/CDS-CDS_Developer-Site/en_US/-/USD/ViewFilteredProducts-SingleVariationTypeFilter .

That is the most recent version available. Unless you have an AMD64 version

of Windows use the 32-bit installation options shown on that webpage. You

have to configure your browser for the security settings for Java as well as

the Control Panel applet which is installed called "Java".

I suggest you enable Java and Java applets only in the Trusted Sites zone.
