Document and settings\Administrator folder missing

March 3, 2008

The administartor folder in C:\Document and settings is missing. I checked

the registry and it is no longer there.. Is there anyway I can get it back ?

Currently I have two user accounts that has the administrator rights.. In

C:\Documents and setting folder, it only list the two user accounts, a

default user folder and All User folder.. Any help on this ? OS is WIN XP

SP2 Home.

There won't be a folder named Administrator in C:\Documents and Settings until

you've logged on at least once with the built-in Administrator account. With XP

Home, you would need to boot into Safe Mode by restarting the computer and

hitting the F8 key until the Window Advanced Options menu appears. You then use

the arrow keys to select Safe Mode. The Administrator account should now be

visible on the Welcome screen.

I have this folder before and I have logged in as administartor when I first

got the PC.. I belived the registry cleaner problem that I ran sometimes ago

has done something and deleted the registry and thus the folder.. I haven't

try to boot in Safe mode yet as I worry the administartor option will n ot be

there and I will be stucked..

Here is my problem.. My PC has the pre-loaded XP and I donot have the actual

XP disk.. All I have is the recovery DVD from the PC manufacturer (E-Machine)

so cannot use the Repair option.. Only Option I have is to use the recovery

disk to reformat the system & bring it back to the state that I bought the

machine.. Not an option at this point as I don't want to reinstall all my

programs.. Just curious.. My system works fine without the Administrator

account.. So what will be the problem if I just leave it as it is ???

If your computer is working fine, having the Administrator account active on

your system is not a critical issue. The account is there for emergency use. One

thing I would advise is to always have at least two accounts you've created on

your computer that are Computer Administrators. That way if one becomes corrupt,

you will, hopefully, still have the other one available.

Here's a test you can run in normal mode to check for the presence of the

Administrator account.

Go to Start -> Run and enter cmd.exe in the Open box.

This should open a command prompt window.

Enter the following command at the prompt and hit the Enter key.

net user

Is the Administrator account listed? If not, enter this command.

net user administrator

Look for a line that says Account active. It should say Yes. If it doesn't enter

the following command.

net user administrator /active:yes

Booting into Safe Mode should not be a problem as your other accounts would be

listed on the Welcome screen. If it's simply a matter of the folder being

deleted, it will be recreated when you log on to the Administrator account.

If none of these suggestions help resolve the problem, your only alternative may

be to reinstall Windows. Since you only have a Restore CD, I'd leave well enough

alone.

Never mind.. Ran the system in safe mode and the Administrator logon icon

showup. After I sign in using this Administrator sign-in and then reboot

back to normal startup, the Administrator folder now show up in c:\document

and settings.

Thanks Nepatsan.. The folder now show up in c:\document and settings after I

did a safe mode startup and sign in using the administrator account. Yes, I

do have two user account setup which both have administrator rights.
