LayTay Posted January 25, 2010 Posted January 25, 2010 Hi, I have a brand new Toshiba n200 netbook that I cannot seem to connect to my home wireless network. I took it to my university's computer center to get help connecting it to the schools protected network (thinking then it would maybe work at home after some settings were changed or whatever), well my internet works at school now but still not at home. I have an AT&T Wireless router that about 4 other computers use, so its not an issue with the network. My IP Address reads up as 0.0.0.0 on the netbook. Whenever I try to "repair" the netbook it goes through all the steps until "Renewing your IP Address" and then it gets stuck there. The "connectivity doctor" says the possible cause is that "IP address was not set properly", I have reset the network like it told me to, still doesn't work. The netbook shows it has an excellent signal so I don't understand what the problem is???? I have also tried running "cmd" ipconfig/all, /release, /flushdns, /renew. (I have no idea what that does really but the school computer place told me to try it. After doing the "renew" step it reads "unable to contact your DHCP server. Request has timed out". Can anyone help me make sense of this?? I am really not a computer person, I just want to get on the interNET with my netbook!!! ahhhh Thank you to anyone who can help at all!! Quote
Tootech Posted January 25, 2010 Posted January 25, 2010 DHCP is the way a router assigns an IP address to your computer, so not having an IP and not be able to contact DHCP server make sense. Who has responsibility for the router setup? It may be that the router DHCP is switched off and IP addresses are set manually for some reason. What model router is it? Quote

The router was set up by AT&T, I wasn't here when they did it...but I have had friends come over and use our WiFi on their computers many times, they just connect and type in our password and it works, so I just don't get why I can't get it to hook up to this little netbook here. The router is from AT&T, and it says "2Wire" on the metal casing and on the front it says 380HGV-B??? On the side of it it says "For advanced configuration: (and then there are some numbers...)" Any ideas??? Quote
jakedude182 Posted January 28, 2010 Posted January 28, 2010 Hi, I have lil knowledge of the networking, but have a toshiba laptop and had a similar problem. It was down to a windows update, try uninstalling a few of the most recent ones and checking for compatibility issues on their online site. , jakedude :) Quote
