mij Posted January 26, 2010 Posted January 26, 2010 I have inherited this computer from my son. I am not sure what the drives are, it has two DVD/CD drives but I can only see one at any one time (that I recognize anyway) in Belaarc advisor. I thought the lower one did not write to discs but it reads them fine. The top one I didn't think worked at all yet when I tried it this morning it formatted a previously written to +R disk which I thought was a read only disk. This is all very confusing. Reading the mail here I thought of getting the alternative so I could deal with - and + WR disks. What's the advice? Cheers jim PS Here's the read-out of the drives Drives Memory Modules c,d 500.11 Gigabytes Usable Hard Drive Capacity 284.01 Gigabytes Hard Drive Free Space TSSTcorp CD/DVDW TS-H653L [CD-ROM drive] EPSON Stylus Storage USB Device [Hard drive] -- drive 5 Generic USB CF Reader USB Device [Hard drive] -- drive 2 Generic USB MS Reader USB Device [Hard drive] -- drive 4 Generic USB SD Reader USB Device [Hard drive] -- drive 1 Generic USB SM Reader USB Device [Hard drive] -- drive 3 ST3500418AS [Hard drive] (500.11 GB) -- drive 0, s/n V60MYJ1S, SMART Status: Healthy 2046 Megabytes Usable Installed Memory Slot 'A0' has 512 MB Slot 'A1' has 512 MB Slot 'A2' has 512 MB Slot 'A3' has 512 MB Local Drive Volumes c: (NTFS on drive 0) 500.11 GB 284.01 GB free Network Drives Quote
mij Posted January 27, 2010 Author Posted January 27, 2010 Oooops! I'm getting two computers mixed up! This one has only one drive but until today was choosy about reading/writing anything. Now it seems to do both no problems. It has only one drive, the one shown. It has space for a second CD/DVD and I would like to put something in there to cater for those disks it wont presently read/write to. The other (spare) is a Dell with two CD/DVD drives and that is the one I wanted to find out if the drives are useful or not. I'd better use BA again tomorrow to find out what drives it has. Sorry about the confusion - just goes to show how confused I am here. cheers jim Quote
mij Posted January 27, 2010 Author Posted January 27, 2010 Ok have done a BA on the other machine. It has XP home on it, is a Dell with a 40g disk and 512 Mb of RAM. It has two cd/dvd disk units a Lite-On LTN486S 48x Max [CD-ROM drive] and a TEAC DVD+RW DV-W58E [CD-ROM drive] and a 3.5" format removeable media [Floppy drive] I know these are fussy about what they write/read but don't have much of a clue as it was my wife's until she replaced it with an all dancing/singing thingy with touchy-feely screen etc. I only had it a short while when my lad gave me this one which is faster and more memory - but just the one cd/dvd drive as mentioned. What I want to know is what cd/dvd drive do I get to go in the other slot? Cheers jim Quote
