I am working on a Dell Poweredge 2900 with an integrated RAID controller.

The server consists of 2 RAID 1 160GB hard drives. I have a few 80GB hard

drives and would like to ghost the OS Image from the 160 GB Drive to the

RAID 0 80GB hard drive.

The trouble I am having is that after the ghost is complete the server will

not boot from the 80GB drive.

Is there a way to break the 160gb Mirror or convert to RAID 0, before

Did you try booting from the CD and doing fixboot and / or fixmbr

after dumping the image? What version of Ghost?

The question that comes to mind is why are you using RAID 0 on a server?

Re: GHOST RAID 1 to 0

I agree, this is what the client requested, I have never downgraded the RAID

on a server before. I built it with RAID1 and never expected to have to

change it.

The client would like everything on seperate hard drives ie) OS (Mirrored

and stored off premisis) DATA Backed up manually every night to another hard

drive, then backed up to tape.

Here is the current config

2 160 GB Hard drives partitioned C:(OS) D:\Data and mirriored to the other

using RAID 1

Client Requested new config:

ALL Raid 0 Drives

1-80GB OS

1-Ghosted to 80GB Drive and removed from premisis.

1-160GB Data

1-160GB Dailey DATA backup

Dailey & Weekly Backup to USB Tape Drive.

I am using GHOST 2003 to ghost the partition from the current C:\Partition

to a new 80GB hard drive, after this is complete the server will not boot

from the new drive due to the current RAID Config. The problem is that it

tells me that I have to reconfigure the drive thus loosing data.

How do you go about fixing the MBR on a NTFS drive?

Well, you ought to be able to boot off the CD and go to the recovery

console (a.k.a. C:\>). From there, you should be able to do a fixboot

and / or fixmbr command. It may help, it may not. It's something to

try.

Re: GHOST RAID 1 to 0

This doesn't make sense to me. RAID 0 requires two drives. If you setup the

two 160 GB drives in a RAID 0 array you would end up with one 320 GB array.

The OS would see this as one drive. It sounds to me like you are actually

not using RAID at all.

It sounds to me like boot.ini is pointing to the wrong ARC path

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/317526

Boot from the OS CD to the recovery console and use the bootcfg command

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/317521

If you have two 80 GB drives setup as a 160 GB RAID 0 array then the above

is probably not the answer. Post the exact error you get when trying to

boot.

Re: GHOST RAID 1 to 0

Kerry,

You are correct, If I could the client would like no raid at all just

separate physical disks as stated below. The problem is that if I disable

the Dell PERC 5/i the server does not see any of the physical drives and I

believe that there are only 2 onboard SATA controllers so a multi-drive

environment would not work in this environment. The config that I am looking

for is the following:

1-80GB OS

>> 1-Ghosted to 80GB Drive and removed from premises.

>> 1-160GB Data

>> 1-160GB Dailey DATA backup

I would like the server to see all physical disks as what they are

installed.

Thank you for all of your help.

Re: GHOST RAID 1 to 0

Check the docs for the RAID controller or phone Dell technical support. I

don't use Dell servers a lot and can't remember how you would set up a

single drive or even if it's possible. It may be you have to use RAID 0. If

that's the case then the bootcfg /rebuild command at the recovery console

should get you going.
