XP 64bit edition - what happened to it ?

I recently bought a new laptop which has a AMD Turion64 processor but came

with VISTA 32 bit. I'm fed up with vista and want to use XP, I find Vista

just annoying in so many ways, mostly because it's clunky and slow but also

treats me like an idiot.

So if I'm going to go back to XP I thought I might as well use the 64bit

version but the trial download has been replaced with Vista. Anyone know

where I can get this please and what problems I might incure using it?

TIA

Have you tried turning UAC off?

Why "might as well"? What specific need do you have that a 64-bit OS would

address?

Have you checked that 64-bit XP drivers are available for your laptop? You

may well find that they aren't, and if the manufacturer doesn't have them,

you won't get them anywhere, and installing xp64 will just leave you with a

partially non-functional system.

Re: XP 64bit edition - what happened to it ?

Use the microsoft.public.windows.64bit.general newsgroup for this one.

The manufacturer of your computer needs to have provided XP Pro x64 specific

drivers on their website or you will not be able to use XP Pro x64

effectively on your machine. XP x86 drivers will not work and Vista x64

drivers will not work. XP Pro x64 is not available in a retail package.

You have to buy the system builder edition from places like NewEgg.

The best supported 64bit Windows currently is Vista x64 but most standard

software packages either just run on XP Pro x64 or have compatible versions.

The critical question is are there XP Pro x64 drivers for your peripherals?

You need to check each manufacturers' website for availablility.
