Copying User Profiles- Copy To button grayed out

Windows XP with all updates

 

 

I am having a problem copying a user profile.

 

I researched the MS Knowledgebase and found article 314478 giving

instructions for copying a user profile which says Click Start button, right

click My Computer, click Properties, click Advanced Tab, Click Settings

under User Profiles. Then click the Profile you want to Copy and then click

Copy To.

 

This where I have a problem. The Copy To button is grayed out on the

Profile I am trying to copy. It is grayed out on some of my Profiles but not

on others.

 

I have tried-

1. Rebooting

2. Logging in as a different User- not the one I am trying to copy (also

with Admin privileges)

 

 

Any suggestions?

What is the goal? what are you trying to do?

My goal as I stated is to copy a user profile.

 

I have User1 setup the way I want. I have created User2. I want to copy

the profile from User1 to User2 so it will be the same to start. Then I

intend to modify User2 slightly for a different purpose- I will be using it

in a different location so my network connection, default printer, etc will

be different. (It is a laptop).

So you want a Default User profile... Sort of.

 

Is this user you are trying to 'copy' a domain user utilizing a cached

logon, by any chance?

Is it a domain user at all?

 

When you rebooted - was the first thing you did was logon as an

administrative user (local account better, but not necessary) and then tried

to copy the profile?

I am not familiar with "domain user". This has always been a stand alone

computer-sometimes connected to a WiFi, Comcast, or Sprint network.

 

When I bring up my User Profiles, all profiles are Type- Local and Status-

Local.

 

I have various profiles-

Administrator

User1

User2

Temp

...and a couple of others

 

All are Type- Local and Status- Local/. If select "Change Type" I only have

one choice- Local profile.

 

When I reboot my computer, I do not get a choice of users to log into. It

automatically logs into User1.

 

If I select Start>Logoff>Switch User I get a choice of all the profiles

except Administrator.

Turn off automatic logon.

Reboot.

It should not automatically log you in... so Log in as Administrator.

(Assuming Windows XP Professional or superset) press CTRL+ALT+DEL at the

welcome screen to get the classic logon prompt so you can logon as

administrator...)

Copy your User1 Profile to whatever you desire.

Have you tried checking the name of the hardware profile in device manager on

the user account you wish to copy and then selecting the same hardware

profile on the user account you wish to add the settings to
