Windows Installer box

Recently, around the time that I installed Sympatico security securities on

my computer, I have found that whenever I start up my computer, I receive a

box on my screen with the title "Windows Installer" - Preparing to install.

Then it says "The feature you are trying to use is on a CD rom on other

resource disk that is not available. Install disk and click OK"

I'm not trying to install anything from a CD rom, and it seems to try to

grab the same file name all the time. In this case, it tried to install

something called "Sonic Update manager." Before that, it tried to install

Corel Photo. I don't use the program anyway, so that I deleted the program,

thinking the issue would be resolved.

However, the installer seems to grab another program and try the same process.

Do you know how I can resolve this and get rid of the messages when I start

up the computer.

Is this a Windows XP issue, or an issue related to Bell Sympatico? The

problem seemed to start around the time I switched to Bell Sympatico for my

anti-virus protection needs. The anti-virus program seems to be working,

though.

Every time I start up my computer, I get the same messages, and I have

trouble getting rid of them. They are very annoying!!

Your question suggests that you may not be removing unwanted programes

in an appropriate manner. Having said that some programme uninstallers

fail to completely remove all remnants of programmes and frequently

startup entries are not removed from the Registry. The worst e.g. some

Symantec software need removal tools from Symantec, which even then do

not always achieve a clean removal.

You should always remove Programmes using the Add / Remove feature in

Control Panel.

You can use Autoruns to remove unwanted StartUp entries left in the

Registry. This is far safer than searching the Registry and deleting or

using msconfig.

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/ProcessesAndThreads/Autoruns.mspx

With Autoruns you can uncheck an item, which disables it from starting,

or you can can right click an item and then delete it. If you uncheck

you can recheck to re-enable the item. It is a much safer approach than

editing the Registry. Another useful feature of the programme is that

you can right click an item and select Search Online to get information

about the item selected.

Hope this helps.
