Monitor resolution changed after installing Vista

Hi

 

I have just put a new hard drive into a Dell ACPI x86 Base and have a Dell 2007FP (Analog) monitor. I was running XP with this setup and had no problems. I have just put a new hard drive in and installed Vista Ultimate, I am now stuck with a screen resolution of 640by480 with High colour 16 bit. It will not let me select a higher resoluton by moving the tag along the bar, when asking it to list all modes it gives me 640 by 480, 16 colours, 640 by 480 256 colours, 800 by 600 256 colours, 1024 by 768 256 colours and 640 by 480 high coour 16 bit.

 

If I select any of the other options and apply it the screen goes down to 8 bit colour and you can't read much of the screen at all. I have checked that the drivers for the graphics adaptor is upto date and that the driver for the monitor is also upto date.

 

Has anyone got any suggestions it is impossible using this setup and being able to see a decent amount of a web page or text on the monitor, it's a lovely 22" monitor and was working fine before I installed Vista, I have not had this problem on any of the HP computers that I have upgraded.

what driver do you have installed. and where did you download it from?

 

what graphics adapter do you have installed, is it part of the motherboard? or a separate card?

 

If the graphics adapter is onboard the motherboard, what is the motherboard model?

I have not had this problem on any of the HP computers that I have upgraded.

 

HP?, Dell?, what was it before you upgraded it?

It is a Dell computer, the graphics and sound are integrated into the motherboard. The drivers (according to the device manager) are the most suitable for the hardware installed. Do you think that if I installed sp1 and sp2 it might help? at this moment I don't actualy know what the motherboard model is, I will have to open her up again and see what I can find.

What I think you will find is that for some reason Windows has installed an XP compatible driver, that's not Vista Compatible

 

but until we know the Hardware configuration, Its hard to say what drivers you should have. but if you can find the service tag number the dell support site should have what you need.

How to force Windows to use a standard VGA compatible driver

 

If all you have changed is the Hard drive and the motherboard is original to the case, then by using the service tag on the case you should be able to obtain the correct vista drivers from dell
