phantom a: drive (floppy)

Recommended Posts

Every time I reboot, my computer sets my floppy as the first boot device. I

dont have a floppy drive on my computer!..

It shows up on my 'my computer' as a: floppy....

It also shows up in my hardware manager. but....I dont have one...honest.

There is nothing plugged into the floppy drive socket on the mobo...

I have tried disabling, removing...etc....but to no avail.

My bios has been updated...and a fresh instal of winxp media edition.

If I reboot, and go to bios settings...it is there in my boot

sequence.......if I disable it ...and set my cd as first, hd as second, and

save it......the computer boots just fine. But...if I reboot....the little

brat keeps coming back.

Is there a way of getting rid of it for good?... I dont want a floppy drive

on my computer.

Thanks..

Sounds like you need to set the BIOS so that it does't have the FDC enabled.

Most BIOS setups have both a Floppy type entry ( 1.44...) and also in

the peripherals category an ability to turn on/off the FD Controller. I'd

check your BIOS and see if that entry is available. Once the controller

is off it's highly unlikely a Floppy drive will be detected.

Google "TWEAK UI for XP"

Download it.

Run it.

There is an option in it that will let you choose which drive letters

will show.

Then you may contact the motherboard tech support, the issue is not with

Windows but a malfunction of the hardware.

Not necessarily. I have two Windows XP builds. One shows a floppy (A:)

drive. The other doesn't. I don't have a floppy drive either (nor I

believe a floppy drive controller). I just live with it.

This statement indicates that the issue is the BIOS, XP doesn't "set the

boot order"

"Every time I reboot, my computer sets my floppy as the first boot device."

Re: phantom a: drive (floppy)

I installed tweakui....set it to NOT show the a: drive and everything

(almost) dissapeared. No icon in 'my computer' for the floppy now...which

makes me happy....it dosnt show up in my boot sequence anymore in the bios

settup...the only thing left over is in my control panel>>hardware

manager.....the floppy driver keeps installing....but I can live with that.

Thanks..

Glad to hear you have a satisfactory solution!
