Is there still a root fille limit

Back in the day, I learned that you don't use the root directory for

files.

It seemed like, at the time, the limit was 256.

Has that restriction been changed?

Nope, no changes, the limit has always been based on the file system in

question. BUT if you use NTFS, you will have trouble reaching the limit.

The limit for FAT16 is 512 entries in a directory. For FAT32 the

limit is 65,534 directory entries. Each file or folder requires at

least 1 directory entry and more if long file names (longer than 8+3)

are used.

It is mostly a matter of housekeeping - better organization and easier

to find things - that makes it a good idea to keep the root directory

relatively clean.

Good luck

Hi Terry,

It was 512 entries for Fat16, but not an issue any longer:
