Low Space On C Drive

I have a C drive of capacity 10GB. When I click on the C drive i see

that I have free space of only 300 MB.

When I select all the files in C drive and click properties they show

size of 5 GB. I am not sure of where the rest of the space has gone.

Can someone help me with this?

What are your system restore settings set to? If you don't know how to

check that, right click on My Computer/Properties/System Restore

tab/Settings button. It doesn't really need any more than 1000 MB.

Also, when you select all the files in C, are you showing hidden files?

I assume you are using windows explorer / My Computer..

When you select all folders you may not be selecting hidden

directories / files which can be set optionally.

If you right click on the drive C then properties and it says you have

300 meg left that is your answer.

With todays operating systems like XP and the most basic common

programs 10 GB drives are simply too small.

To ensure reasonable disk performance, you need to keep 25% of it free

space. An installation of XP plus updates plus other applications is simply

too large to allow this condition. XP should not be installed on anything

less than 20gb if you want decent performance.

Forget any documentation which specifies the minimum space taken up by XP.

The figures are NEVER real world..

I'll second that. I just took a quick look and my Windows

directory alone is five-and-a-half GB. When I needed to

replace a dead drive for someone last year the smallest

in the store, at a very reasonable price, was 100 GB, and

I was tempted to go to 200 GB (but it was their money).

Too small.

You may not have access to system files/folders (or hidden files/folders) so

they're not included in the 5GB size you're seeing.

Help you do what? Get a larger hard disk and a ghosting software. You may be

able to resize C partition when ghosting to a larger disk.
