Guest John Whites Posted March 5, 2008 Posted March 5, 2008 I downloaded the client side extensions for Windows XP and have been testing them out with my Windows 2008 test box. Question 1: at this page: http://www.windowsecurity.com/articles/Group-Policy-related-changes-Windows-Server-2008-Part3.html He says you all you need to use this is vista or server 08 with the remote tools... Am I to understand that I don't need to even have a SINGLE domain controller at all upgraded to server 2008 to use the client side extension features like preferences (map drives, shortcuts etc) Question 2: I notice when using the map drive extension that if you give a drive a name and have say 3 drive mappings specified on the windows xp client all of the sides will be named what the last drive name was specified as. Is this a known issue or is there anywhere I can report this? Thanks in advance, John W
Guest John Whites Posted March 5, 2008 Posted March 5, 2008 Re: Client Side Extensions (Server 2008 Question) Also I read something on microsoft's site about my first question but I'm still unclear on it....will it mess up existing GPOs since the new management interface is much different has settings for vista? Also what would be the best way to deploy the client side extensions since they are EXE files. Create a zap with some kind of command switch for the install? Guest John Whites Posted March 7, 2008 Posted March 7, 2008 Re: Client Side Extensions (Server 2008 Question) Answer: no it won't mess anything up. Deployment: I just made a script that adds a registry key when it installs (so it doesn't install it twice). Script runs installer with some command switches. Applied script to GPO that pcs are in with a WMI filter to deploy to correct OS version.
