Need XPHome Password

A tech removed a virus but when tried to log in again it now has a window

asking for a password. We never put a password in originally as it's a

family computer and we only use one password for things like this. Someone

said there's a microsoft generic password like starblankstar combination for

times like this but it doesn't work either. How do you get back into your

computer? Everything online says to download a file etc. I can't do that if

I can't log in?

RE: Need XPHome Password

In the login screen press ctrl+alt+del twice

In the textbox type administrator

leave the password blank

If that doesn't work reboot and keep pressing f8 until a black screen pops

up select safe mode log in and reset the password for your account

If that does not work call the tech and ask him why he password protected

your computer.

He didn't reset it, we never had one to begin with. We think maybe the virus

did this. I will try that and let you know. Thanks!!

Re: Need XPHome Password

I can think of 2 things that you may consider.

On my home PC with XP, I have a "blank" password. The password screen

still pops up on booting. I just enter the username, leave the

password blank, & logon. You must specifically tell XP not to show

the password screen. Maybe the virus or the remover reset this last

item. Just try a blank password.

Re: Need XPHome Password

The default administrator password is likely one of the following

(definately not blank)

Administrator administrator ADMINISTRATOR

Administrator is the most likely default password for the

Administrator logon.

Re: Need XPHome Password

The default administrator password is set when operating system is installed

therefore on a oem operating system the default password for the builtin

Administrator is almost always blank not Administrator, administrator,

ADMINISTRATOR

Have you ever bought a computer with the password in the box?

Re: Need XPHome Password

Note: The default password for the built in Windows Administrator account is

normally blank (none).

For XP Home users:

Boot the computer into Safe Mode

Do this by pressing the F8 key after the Power On Self Test is finished,

until the Start menu appears.

This will get you to the correct menu window.

Once in Safe Mode, you will see the normally hidden Administrator account

and any other accounts.

(Note: Accounts are displayed alphabetically).

Use the Up/down arrow keys to highlight the 'Administrator' account;

Remember as mentioned above: The default password is a blank (no password

required).

Also See: Forgotten your Windows XP Home password

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/894902/en-us

and: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/894901/

Once your in, then:

Click Start/Run/and type in: Control Userpasswords2 and then press OK

Next click on the Advanced tab and then click Manage Passwords.

Re: Need XPHome Password

I have many times ever since the days on windows 3.1.

And, believe it or not, the default Administrator password straight

out of the box has been Administrator.

Maybe my boss & I used a different supplier than you.

Why not have the "tech" fix what he screwed up? If he won't, or can't,

stop payment on the check you gave him.

There's no such thing. By default, the password is blank.

> How do you get back into your

> computer? Everything online says to download a file etc. I can't do that if

Simply log in using the built-in Administrator account (which

cannot be deleted) and modify the desired account(s) and use Start > Run

> "control userpasswords2" to modify the desired account(s).

Unless you've set the built-in Administrator's password via the

Management Console (_not_ the Control Panel), it's probably still blank.

WinXP Pro asks the user to set the Administrator's password during

installation, but WinXP Home doesn't.

By design, the only way to log into the Administrator account of

WinXP Home is to reboot into Safe Mode. For WinXP Pro, pressing

CTRL+ALT+DEL twice at the Welcome Screen will produce the standard login

dialog box.

Nonsense.

Then it's that supplier who's been setting a password; by default,

there is none.

RE: Need XPHome Password

Thanks to all of you for the help. Still no luck. More specific, there is

no place to put in a user name only a password. Any form of administrator

does not fit, it's two digits too large for the password allowed. There is

no question mark or next to click on. When we try a password it says "did

you forget your password? Please type password again , be sure to use correct

upper lower letters". When we click on the green arrow it says "unable to

log you on because of an account restriction". My son said he took home my

SAM file to work with it and it is in that part with an encrypted admin

password. So I sent him the link given for the new toy to look at. He's

not here but a couple times a week so we are doing this through phone & email.

The tech is an old friend who has done nothing his whole life but work on

programs etc. for various companies. He knows all the languages even before

Microsoft. He taught my sons enough when little to make them fearless about

working on their own and then they worked as lead techs through HS & college.

Now they have degree specific jobs but still know tech to solve problems

with their personal company computers etc. This son has built and rebuilt my

computer for about 10 yrs. and has never had a password on it. The tech

hasn't had this problem before or this particular virus.

I hate to reinstall etc. if it's can be a simple password. Rotten bugs!

Thanks again, I will let you know if we solve or give up.
