Can you have a KMS host that will activate multiple OS's such as Vista, 2008

Std, and Ent? If so, now? The command I know of will wipe the original key if

you import a new one.

RE: KMS on 2008

Hello,

Yes but you need to run KMS that is on Windows Server 2008 or you need to

download new version of KMS version 1.1for Windows Server 2003\Windows

Vista with SP1

948003 An update is available that installs Key Management Service 1.1 for

Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1 (SP1) and later versions

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;948003

Plus you need your Volume License key for Windows Server 2008.

The different volume license keys for Windows Server will activate

different skus of Windows Server 2008 and they will activate Windows VIsta

client machines.

Thanks,

Darrell Gorter[MSFT]

RE: KMS on 2008

Yeah, I have an ent 2008 server right now and my kms keys, I just need to

understand how to get them all into the same OS. Do you just use that vbs

script with the command to import the key? It seems that will kick out the

previous one though. This is where I am lost, sorry. Thanks for the quick

reply.

RE: KMS on 2008

Hello,

The new keys are hierarchical so they activate the clients as well as

servers.

So yes you use the script, yes it will kick out the old key, but the new

key should activate Windows Server 2008 ( which skus depends on which

Windows Server KMS key you use) and Windows Vista clients.

Thanks,

RE: KMS on 2008

Oh that is the grouping you are talking about right?

Vista, GroupA, GroupB, GroupC...so if we have a datacenter KMS I can add it

and that will let us setup any system?

One more question though, we currently have a vista KMS and we wanted to

setup this new 2k8 server in a VM. When I started the service, apparently the

service stopped on the other system but vista installs were not

activating...the service on 2k8 server should automate the DNS information

right? I know on the Vista system some registry changes needed to be made for

it to work.

Thanks,

RE: KMS on 2008

Hello,

Yes that is the grouping and yes, if you use the Datacenter one you will

activate all of them.

Starting the new service on the Windows 2008 machine should not have

stopped the old service, however it should have registered with DNS so the

clients may all be pointing to that machine now.

It will have to build up the count to 25 again for the Windows Vista

clients before they will activate.

Thanks,

Darrell Gorter[MSFT]

RE: KMS on 2008

Does it matter if the service is running or not to import the key? Having

issues with the services stopping because of the vista licesnsing server we

have. I start on 2008, it stops on vista and vice versa.

When I run the command slmgr.vbs servername user pass -ipk key i get the

following error.

Error 0x80041064 occurred in connecting to server [servername].

any ideas?

RE: KMS on 2008

Hello,

Hmm that is a WMI error code that usually means the the credentials are not

correct for the local machine. Both these machines are on a domain

correct? For name are using domain\username syntax or just username? If

just username does that username exist as a local account on either machine

as well as exist a domain name?

So it would appear that slmgr is attempting to communicate with the local

machine not the remote machine.

are you on the KMS host machine on Windows Server 2008 or on the KMS host

machine running Windows Vista?

Thanks,

Darrell Gorter[MSFT]
