"RPC Server is unavailable" error

I have a Win2k3 terminal server that periodically gives domain users

the message "RPC Server is unavailable" (local machine users can login

however). It's been doing this for a few years and we always just

rebooted it to fix the issue.

I don't know what the cause is, but I have an easier fix which I'd

like to put out here for any future victims of this issue:

Update the hosts file ("c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts") in

notepad.

You don't even need to change anything in it, just saving the file

causes windows to reset whatever it is that gets out of whack to cause

my RPC issue. I don't know why.

Re: "RPC Server is unavailable" error

Hi Matt,

You can sometimes get this error when an application is talking to MSWord,

etc via Automation and it has a bug (or perhaps something gets upset in

MSWord).

The fix would be to restart the 2 apps in question (i.e MSWord and the

custom application).

Regards,

Tom
