Guest Randy Starkey Posted March 6, 2008 Posted March 6, 2008 Hi, How do I clean all the extraneous mappings listed in network neighborhood. I'm not sure how those get listed individually. It seems if you go to delete them, it wants to actually delete all the files, and all I want to do is remove the listings of the drives in network neighborhood. I can't actually figure out the reason they are showing up. Some machines I have show more of these listings than others. I must be missing something here - mental block... --Randy Starkey
Guest Marcin Posted March 6, 2008 Posted March 6, 2008 Re: network neighborhood Randy, use NET USE drive_letter /DEL or Disconnect Network Drive from context sensitive menu of either My Computer or My Network Places... hth Marcin
Guest Randy Starkey Posted March 8, 2008 Posted March 8, 2008 Re: network neighborhood Marcin, Thanks for the reply. I don't really want to disconnect the drives, and I do have the drive letters in my computer, but I'd like to get rid of all the listings just under network neighborhood when you first open it. It's a lot of clutter. I can't even figure how it got there! Guest Bill Grant Posted March 10, 2008 Posted March 10, 2008 Re: network neighborhood Have you tried simply right-clicking on each entry and deleting it? Guest Bruce Sanderson Posted March 10, 2008 Posted March 10, 2008 Re: network neighborhood Although the warning you get when deleting the shortcut from My Network Places indicates it is deleting the target of the shortcut, only the shortcut itself in My Network Places is actually deleted. Confirm this yourself by deleting one of the shortcuts that points to something innocuous or that you have a copy of somewhere else. You can suppress the automatic addition of shortcuts to My Network Places via Group Policy (or a Local Policy): User Configuration Administrative Templates Desktop Do not add shares of recently opened documents to My Network Places -- Bruce Sanderson http://members.shaw.ca/bsanders It is perfectly useless to know the right answer to the wrong question. Guest Chris White Posted March 10, 2008 Posted March 10, 2008 Re: network neighborhood Those shortcuts get there because you are accessing shares on the network from the client. For instance, if I access a share on the server via my DFS architecture, and I go onto an area that i've not yet got in My Network Places, it will automatically create a shortcut for me so I can get back to that share quickly. It does this everytime I access a new share structure. For instance there is a share that is \\domain.local\IT\Software and that is on the My Network Places. However, the real location of Software is on server StorageUnit1. So if i go to \\storageunit1\software for instance, it will add that shortcut onto My Network Places as a new share mapping. Over time these build up on my computer because I access files and shares in different ways being an Admin. I was told about ways to deploy Nethood shortcuts to set clients using a GPO and a script. But I haven't delved into this yet. I dont know if there is a way to clean out the nethood for that user remotely but certainly just deleting the shortcuts is easy if its just for you. -- Chris White United Kingdom "Randy Starkey" wrote: > Can anyone help on this?
