Looping Userinit.exe when logging on

After running a health check on the laptop of one of our remote users

yesterday (defrag, disk cleanup etc) I updated the virus scanner to McAfee

V8.0 hotfix 13 and ran a complete scan. The only thing the system stated it

had found & deleted was a single trojan proxy.piky. This was in a *.tmp file

that had popped up in notepad as soon as the desktop opened following logon.

However, after rebooting, the laptop runs the login script but then goes no

further.

Taskmanager shows 100% cpu usage and the userinit.exe process running in

excess of 100 times. This is the same when trying to run in safe mode but if

I edit the registry and replace userinit.exe with explorer.exe, the machine

boots ok.

There would appear to be no sign of waupdater.exe having replaced

userinit.exe at any time.

TIA for any help ;)
