raca24 Posted February 10, 2010 Posted February 10, 2010 I have dell inspiron 1501 laptop a couple of years old but hardly ever used. I get an endless hour glass after logging on. I can boot into safe mode without problem. I have twice performed the dell factory image restore, updated windows including SP1. I don't have the vista reinstallation disk but i do have an XP professional disk. What are my options here, I suspect a driver issue? the computer was purchased in dec 2007. thanks Ron Quote

BenAnderson Posted March 18, 2010 Posted March 18, 2010 Hey Hey racca how did you solve ur hourglass problem cause i've the exact same thing with the same laptop? Quote
Jelly Bean Posted March 18, 2010 Posted March 18, 2010 Hey Ben this could be a number of issues. Click start all programs/accessories and right click on command prompt and choose run as admin. Type in sfc /scannow and hit enter and let it run. This will check for corruption. Click start/all programs/accessories/system tools/open disk clean up and check all boxes and hit ok. Is it possible you have a virus? Quote Rwy'n ceisio fy ngorau......................

Jelly Bean Posted March 18, 2010 Posted March 18, 2010 From the problem description, I understand that the update KB929777 failed to be installed and the error code 8000FFFF was received. Please feel free to let me know if I misunderstood the issue. I understand the inconvenience you encountered when trying to perform Windows Update. Please be assured that I will do my best to help you. The issue may be caused by the following factors: 1. The installation is affected by some third-party security software. 2. The downloaded installation file is corrupted. In order to narrow down the cause of our issue, let's refer to the following steps: NOTE: Some third party programs can affect the Windows Update service. If you are running any third party applications such as Spyblocker, Internet or web accelerators (programs designed to boost the speed of the Internet connection), security or anti-virus programs (Norton, McAfee, etc.), I recommend we temporarily disable or shut them down and then try accessing the Windows Update site later. Please be sure to enable them again when the update process has been completed. Step 1: Reload the Update temporary folders =================================== This step can help us reload the downloaded installation files. 1. Click Start, Run, type: cmd and press Enter. Please run the following command in the opened window. Net stop WuAuServ 2. Click Start, Run, type: %windir% and press Enter. 3. In the opened folder, rename the folder SoftwareDistribution to Sdold. 4. Click Start, Run, type: cmd and press Enter. Please run the following command in the opened window. BenAnderson Posted March 18, 2010 Posted March 18, 2010 hey jelly bean I think its corrupted files from the malware but once my laptop has finished the clean up and the scan i'll try what ypu've told me to do I'm downlaoding System Update Readiness Tool (KB947821) would this be any help because i was reading up on microsoft and this seems to be one of the best solutions i can find that do you think? Jelly Bean Posted March 19, 2010 Posted March 19, 2010 You can try the tool ben however I am thinking corruption and possibly a repair being done on the operating system. I dont want to asume a recovery as all files would have to be backed up first and can take time. I would agree a virus may of caused some corruption.
