Print problems on Win Server 2003

Hi all.

Hope you can help me. Our network guy flew the coop.

I've been assigned the job of picking up where he left off. Yay!

We have two workstations that are linked to a WinServer2003.

Both workstations are on the same domain as the server and can access

files on the server.

We have a Canon C3200 network printer.

One workstation can print to the printer no problem. The other can't.

I checked and the printer driver was not installed on the server.

So I downloaded and installed the most recent driver onto the server.

No luck printing from the server.

Researched. Found ip address of printer. Can ping printer from

server no prob.

Un-installed printer from server. Reboot. Reinstall and attach

driver to the correct port and ip address. Still no luck. Can still

ping printer.

The workstation that can print is using a 2004 driver, so I downloaded

that driver and installed it to the server. Still no luck.

Tried different config of the port on the server. No luck.

Another thing I noticed is that I can see the printer installed under

Printers and Faxes in the Control Panel of the server but don't see

the printer installed in the server config menu.

Are these somehow different? I'm pretty new to this dedicated server

thing.

The OS of the server IS the server right?

So, if a printer is installed in the os under Printers and Faxes it is

installed on the server, right?

Are there permissions that need to be granted to either the server or

the other workstation in order to allow them to print?

I tried to think about what was different between the 2 workstations

and the obvious one is that the workstation that can print is running

xp pro and the other is win2k pro.

I'm sure that there are other, deeper differences in their

configurations but I haven't gotten that far.

I did mimic the port settings of the working workstation on the server

to no avail.

Could this be a driver issue?

A network issue?

Any thoughts?

Thanks much in advance!

Re: Print problems on Win Server 2003

Try setting up the printer and installing the printer driver directly on the

Win2k Pro workstation and verify whether you will be able to print in this

manner. This should clarify whether your problems are on the

workstation/driver side or have to do with the printer configuration on the

server (or communication between server and workstation).

Print permissions are assigned directly from the printer's Properties dialog

box (Security tab) - grant them either directly to the user of the Win2k Pro

workstation or a group that user is a member of...

Good idea. This one's interesting. I tried this. Since the good

workstation works with a driver being installed on the server or not I

tried this approach on the Win2k box. At first the queue dialog pops

when I send print job to queue and hangs saying printer is busy or

print error. I made changes. Now when I click print in an app or

test page the queue dialog pops up then goes away immediately

suggesting that the printing is working, yet nothing prints at the

printer.

Could this be a permissions thing?

Re: Print problems on Win Server 2003

OP here.

Here's an interesting twist. Not sure if this changes anyone's

opinion, but.

The user of the bad workstation, the win2k box, just fessed up and

said that he could actually print to this printer using the printer

installed on his box for the Canon 330 that we used to have. When he

was installing the driver for the new printer, the 3200, he deleted

the old printer on his box.

I can't find the install files for the old printer on his box so I

can't just reinstall it.

Since he could print from the old printer installation and we cannot

from the new one does this suggest more of a configuration issue on

this particular workstation?

Thanks again, to all!

Hi all. OP here again.

Another twist.

I reinstalled the printer on the server as a local printer per the

instructions in server 2003.

I printed a test page and watched the activity monitor on the printer.

It showed repeatedly trying to print the test page, yet it never

printed.

It also showed receiving all the test pages I did yesterday that

didn't print.

The only place in the printer menu that I found to set permissions is

not enabled.

Is this a defective printer?

Thanks again, y'all!

Re: Print problems on Win Server 2003

Drivers for Windows 2000 are typically "driver model 2" - NT4 and 2000

whereas the XP and 2003 drivers are typically "driver model 3 - XP and 2003.

Unfortunately, when you have mixed 2000 and 2003 environment, sometimes

there are significant compatibility issues with printer drivers.

I tried to find information about your Canon C3200 on Canon's web site, but

unfortunately could find nothing. Is this an "ImageRunner", "ImageClass",

multi-function, inkjet or what?

If you can, I suggest cleaning up the print environment on the print

server - see for example

http://members.shaw.ca/bsanders/CleanPrinterDrivers.htm. If a complete

cleanup is not practical, then at least ensure you have deleted the driver

for the problematic printer

Printers and Faxes

click File, Server Properties

select the Drivers tab

select the driver for the Canon C3200 and click Remove

In Windows 2003, that usually does a pretty good job of removing all parts

of the printer driver.

Make sure you have the printer driver specifically for Windows Server 2003

or XP and install it. Some manufacturer's package the driver only as an

executable, while others package them for installation via the Add Printer

Wizard. Check the documentation for the printer or driver.

I suggest if at all possible, replace the Windows 2000 with Windows XP.

You may also get better, more specific help from the printing newsgroups -

I've taken the liberty to cross-post to them.

It is perfectly useless to know the right answer to the wrong question.
