ATaylor Posted February 14, 2010 Author Posted February 14, 2010 im not really sure what i have, a month or so ago i did Restart my computer to the settings that it had when i bought the PC, it was recomended only as a last resort. things started going wrong when a kodak camra device file was installed, i had error messages with information on the problem and kodak was in it, since then i started deleting things to try and speed up the pc and think i deleted something i shouldnt have, which is when these other problems started, i was unable to go into any of the files in ''Control Panel'' i kept getting error messages saying they cant find a certain file, so thats when i done a master reset to recover deleted files. this is the error i have at the moment when trying to install my Dongle Upgrade. ''The current version of the application could not be determined. The setup will now terminate.'' is there a suitable time for me tobe online to comunicate with you, or just check a few times a day? Plastic Nev Posted February 14, 2010 Posted February 14, 2010 Hi just check in when you can, one of us may have answered in between as we all come and go at different times. My thoughts though are that as you have deleted various files, and provided you have your important stuff backed up elsewhere, it may be best to go back to the factory settings again. At the moment no one now really knows what is missing. If you have a full copy of the windows operating system you could try a Windows repair, but it does need the full disk and not a factory recovery disk. Let us know exactly what you have and what it says on the label of any disks you have, and we may be able to go further. Nev. Quote Need help with your computer problems? ATaylor Posted February 18, 2010 Author Posted February 18, 2010 SiS Motherboard Utilities CD, Lexmark X1100 series disc 1+2 (for printer/scanner i think),Microsoft Works 8, Philips LCD Monitor. these are all the CD's i had when i bought the PC. in 2004 i think. Quote
Plastic Nev Posted February 20, 2010 Posted February 20, 2010 Hum, those disks are just the various drivers disks for the motherboard, printer etc. How did you reset the system back to manufacturers settings last time? ExTS Admin Starbuck Posted February 20, 2010 ExTS Admin Posted February 20, 2010 If you didn't receive an OS disc, it must be on a partition somewhere. What is the make and model of your system? Quote Member of:UNITE
ATaylor Posted February 21, 2010 Author Posted February 21, 2010 Microsoft windows XP Home Edition Version 2002 Service pack 3 iQon Technologies Intel® Pentium® 4 CPU 3.40GHz 3.40GHz, 512MB of RAM is that the info wanted? Got this info from system properties/General Quote
ExTS Admin Starbuck Posted February 21, 2010 ExTS Admin Posted February 21, 2010 Hi A,Taylor IQon Technologies went into Liquidation on 22 jan 2008 (does not exist anymore?) But i did find this: http://www.iqonsupport.ie/ Technical support|software|How to reload Windows XP - iQon Technologies System Recovery System Recovery – No Format On boot, press F10. This will launch the System Recovery. Choose the “Advanced Options” button. “System Recovery – No Format”, will reinstall Windows XP but will back up all your files. Again you can exit at this stage before you run the Recovery. Choose “Next” and “yes” to run the Recovery. Afterwards when you restart Windows XP, it is back at the out of box mode (as if the PC was new), type in your COA number, Computer Name, and User names. In Windows, open Windows Explorer and browse to “My Old Directory Structure” to find your old data files. This may help if you want to reinstall the OS. But don't forget, you may have to run Windows Updates to get all your updates back again. Quote Member of:UNITE

ATaylor Posted February 21, 2010 Author Posted February 21, 2010 that link didnt work either, i found this tho, would u recomend for this, what would i need to do? Philips CD Downloads | Drivers | User Guides | Service Manuals | Boot Restore Diagnostic Disk | Recovery CDs | or anything else? cheers Quote
Tootech Posted February 21, 2010 Posted February 21, 2010 Those CD's won't reinstall Windows, don't bother with them. Just going back to Starbuck's link, did you try pressing F10 as soon as the PC starts? Thats not when Windows starts, but as soon as you press the power button. Press it a few times, it should start Recovery Angel and walk you through a full Windows restore. Quote
ATaylor Posted February 22, 2010 Author Posted February 22, 2010 Thanks, for that but any idea how I get the COA number for the computer? Quote
ExTS Admin Starbuck Posted February 22, 2010 ExTS Admin Posted February 22, 2010 Hi A,Taylor any idea how I get the COA number for the computer? The Windows 25-character Product Key (required to perform the installation) is stored on the CD packaging on a bright orange sticker that says "Do not lose this number." If it was an OEM (factory installed) license, it's stored on a label that the PC manufacturer affixed to the exterior of the PC case, or on the bottom of a laptop. Quote Member of:UNITE

ExTS Admin Starbuck Posted February 22, 2010 ExTS Admin Posted February 22, 2010 cheers bud, that seems to have done the job good  i now need Virus Protection, Any Suggestions?? Sure, no problem: Avira AntiVir Avast free Bitdefender Free MS Security Essentials ... see note* Install one of these, update the definitions and then run a full scan. Let it quarantine/delete anything it finds. Let me know if there is anything that it reports but can not remove. Note*: Upon installation MS Security Essentials will check that your OS is a legal copy. Quote Member of:UNITE

ATaylor Posted February 22, 2010 Author Posted February 22, 2010 Hi again, im trying to set the pc up with all the updates, thought i done it all, then i have come accross a few problems, an online game i play is not the same quality, some of the writing is a bit blured and part of the game that needs java/flash doesnt work as if i dont have java/flash,they were 2 of the things i downloaded, and now i need to scroll right on the page where i didnt before, my missus was on facebook and had the same problem with the scroll right, and she also had a note on facebook saying that she has the old internet explorer and should get windows 8. so we went throught the steps to update and while the update/download it got to a stage where it stopped without finishing, it wouldnt cancel and couldnt close the box either, was as if it crashed. ExTS Admin Starbuck Posted February 23, 2010 ExTS Admin Posted February 23, 2010 Let's see what java versions etc you are running: Download Security Check from here or here. Save it to your Desktop. Double click SecurityCheck.exe and follow the onscreen instructions inside of the black box. A Notepad document should open automatically called checkup.txt; please copy and paste the contents of that document in your next reply. Thanks Quote Member of:UNITE

ATaylor Posted February 23, 2010 Author Posted February 23, 2010 Hi, Did you run all the windows updates after the reinstalled the OS? Your version of IE should have been updated to version 7 automatically. i did, but it didnt finish, it crashed, after posting on here last night i tried again and all updates finished and are done now, my screen issue is the same and need to change the Zoom to 88%, the fonts and toolbars are a little bigger too Quote
RandyL Posted February 23, 2010 Posted February 23, 2010 It would probably be helpful if we stick to one issue at a time. Updating drivers and setting screen resolutions are things that need doing after a reinstall but your original problem is solved is it not? Avira AntiVir Personal - Free Antivirus CA eTrust Antivirus I think Starbuck is going to say that you are running two AV's. That's a recipe for problems. CA Trust was probably part of your original congiguration. CA Trust usually comes prebundled with computers and I think part of the AOL package too. Personally I prefer Antivir but you need to pick one or the other. Quote We are all members helping other members. Please return here where you may be able to help someone else.
