can anyone help....i think my son has pulled the plug on my pc before proper shutdown method. i am now left with a constant loop back to the "WE APOLOGIZE FOR ANY INCONENIENCE..."screen no matter what option i highlight and enter with the up/down keys. ive tried inserting the xp disk...it loads all the files at the windows setup screen...then i press "r" for the recovery console.....after selecting 1: c:\ windows and and entering the admin password im left at c:\windows!!!! What Next? Should i be trying something else? i have unplugged all hardware from the pc such as printers, usb's etc leaving only the monitor and keyboard..(just in case). im confused and frustrated, please help.

Instead of going into the Recovery Console try doing a Startup Repair. How to do a Startup Repair.

Type chkdsk /r and press Enter. There is a space between the chkdsk and /r.

Leave it to do its stuff and when fisnished type Exit and press Enter.

Reboot and see if it runs.

Thanks for you quick and informative response, however when i get to the page after the END-USER AGREEMENT, there is no option to repair, only to SETUP, CREATE or DELETE...am i doing something wrong?

Did you press "ENTER" (NOT "R") to begin the repair install on the previous screen?

However since Tootech has posted you should try what he suggests first. After all he is a Extreme Tech Support - Free PC Help Tech Member. I trust him more than myself.

The chkdsk is the first port of call - it checks files/folders for errors, bad sectors etc and puts right what it can. If that doesn't work then I'm afraid we are back to Randy's repair install.

I've found a more graphical description of the repair install.

You guys (or girls) are the best...my problems are now over (for the time being). Did what you suggested with perfect results. Windows is now booting up fine.

Your true stars...

Many thanks
