svchost.exe - Application Error

Recommended Posts

Lately I've been getting many of these error messages:

svchost.exe - Application Error

The instruction at "0x009a9eec" referenced memory at "0x00000000". The

memory could not be "written".

Click on OK to terminate the program

Click on CANCEL to debug the program

I'm running XP Pro on a Hypersonic laptop.

I don't know why they started appearing, or how to get rid of them.

Also any function relating to locating folders is very slow.

Thanks for any help!

Run a /thorough/ check for hijackware, including posting your hijackthis log

to an appropriate forum.

When all else fails, HijackThis v2.0.2

(http://aumha.org/downloads/hijackthis.zip) is the preferred tool to use.

It will help you to both identify and remove any hijackware/spyware with

If the procedures look too complex - and there is no shame in admitting this

isn't your cup of tea - take the machine to a local, reputable and

independent (i.e., not BigBoxStoreUSA) computer repair shop.

Thanks for your response, PA Bear.

I ran HiJack this, then posted the log to their forum, where it sits

unanswered...

Nothing was picked up in the scan.

I'll let you know when/if I get a response in the forum.

Your thread (apparently): http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=25340

Please read: http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288

You should be using HijackThis v2.0.2, not v1.99.1.

Notepad: Format | Word wrap <=uncheck this before scanning again with

hijackthis and posting another log so it's legible.

Your log shows that you do not have an anti-virus application installed.

There's a very good chance that the experts there have chosen to overlook

your thread because of this irresponsible practice. If I was handling the

log, I'd tell you to format & reinstall Windows. See

Re: svchost.exe - Application Error

Hi PA Bear;

I was using MS OneCare up until a few weeks ago, when I had an IT guy come

in and reconfigure my office. The messages began popping up while I was

using OneCare, so he uninstalled it to see if it was contributing to the

problem.

I didn't re-install OneCare because the IT guy was suggesting using a combo

of Addaware, Spybot, etc., which are on my new (XP Pro) boxes; I was

considering going that route with this one (my laptop) but may stay with

OneCare since I've paid for the subscription already. I haven't surfed much

on this box lately, so chances of recent infection are low.

I'm interested to hear your thoughts on Onecare (I haven't perused the

list - sorry).

I'll go ahead and re-run HighJack This (after starting OneCare or other

program) again as you suggest below, before flattening the system.

Thanks again for your help!
