DeskTop icons disappearing

I have XP PRO, IE6 SR2, Avast, Ad-Aware, and Windows Defender (all run

daily). Only 4 programs on Start Up, and use adaptive software for the

blind.

 

I have "sent" 2 URLs to my desktop, their icons appear, and within a few

days they are gone. Now, also, when ever I utilize a program, it ends up on

linking to Start.

 

Is WD the culprit? I've had strange things going on and ran Penicillin, and

a MS viral/Trojan check in addition, and nothing's "amiss." HA.
