I have just been cleaning bugs out of system. I am getting this error message

Bad Direct sound driver. Please install proper drivers or select another device in configuration. Error code 887800078.

There is a sound driver it was working yesterday but after I scanned for viruses and malware it stopped working and this error message came up.

I am running windows xp professional with nod 32, spybot, super anti spyware and Loranis Trojan Remover.

Any help would be appreciated...

    3. Next, click on Start > Run, type Cleanmgr and click on OK.
    4. Click on the More Options tab.
    5. Click the Clean Up button in the System Restore section to remove all previous restore points except the most recent one.

This will remove any infected files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in "System Restore" are protected to prevent any programs changing those files. This is the only foolproof way to ensure the deletion of those files.

Note: Do not clear restore points on a regular basis as doing so will clear all previous restore points even those that you may need. System Restore is a useful tool to revert your computer back to a working condition if something goes wrong.

Re-enable all your security applications and please return here and tell us how the computer seems to be operating.

Hi, and welcome to Extreme Tech Support - Free PC Help.

Can you tell us please first of all, a little more about the Trojan remover, it is not one I am familiar with, and to be truthful, if you have got the name correct, a search gave me no information at all. That in itself gives me suspicions you may have a rogue. However please tell us where you got it and where from, so I or one of our other members can find out more about it.

Next thing we need is to know the make and model number of your computer so we can find a source for downloading a correct driver for your sound system. Plus any information about your sound system, especially if a separate sound card.

help sound device please

Hi guys,

Tried a system restore and everything seems to be back to normal. With regards to Loanis Trojan Remover I have been using this useful little program for over a year and if anything it has helped my PC's performance. It does what it says on the box. It got a couple that nod 32 missed. One stage I could not get into certain drives on my PC ran Trojan Scanner and it resolved the problem. My PC guy is pretty knowledgeable and was impressed with this program. If you want to find out more google it I am sure you will find their web page if you want to look into it.

Thanks for your time and advice guys. Nice one :-)

Hi, glad you got it sorted with the good old system restore, a wonderful invention.

However, I also got that from Google, so ignored the red ring from WOT, and tried the link to Loaris, I got a Web Of Trust warning that the site has a poor reputation, yet McAffee site advisor said it is OK, all rather strange. Did you find anything out of the ordinary Match?

Well from what I can find out, the download and product are good, but I have found comments about the blog containing link's to malware sites, however I can't find the Blog page.

It would also seem that it has had a number of reports to the WOT as a phishing site and their is an interesting article here that makes me wonder

But I don't think it will be making it onto my recommended tools list ;)

Cheers Match bud, I will start a bit more research myself now, might be a good idea to go ask one of the security guys if they know anything.

Hrh Fish, if you do look in on this thread again, please bear with us for a while, but as yet do not be alarmed, it may all turn out to be a red herring or false positive.

Any results I find I will post for everyone's benefit.

OK, I think I can now say that the bad reputation and poor safety warning given by WOT may now be out of date and comes from that blog, plus bad links on it. It looks like the blog has been pulled and closed by Loaris because of this.

As far as the software itself, it does have good reviews, both from C.Net and also Softpedia. Also there is nothing to say it is a rogue or scam either from spyware warrior.

So it looks like a clean bill of health for now.

I will of course keep an eye on it though, but it is obviously fairly new, being maybe just over a year old, and like a lot of good things, will take time to get established.

I hope this is of some peace of mind for all, that when presented with something we don't know or understand, that thorough research is carried out. Including asking fellow moderators or technical helpers, even those we know from elsewhere, so thanks go to Starbuck, and also yourself Match.
