*.wav File Type - Can't Set to Sndrec32 for Terminal Server Users

Ever since the latest version of Windows Media Player was loaded on my

Windows 2003 Terminal Server, I am having problems associating the *.wav

file type with the sound recorder (sndrec32.exe) that comes standard with

windows.

I am running mandatory profiles for all of my users. I have tried the

following:

1. Ran Windows Media Player as Admin in Install mode and deselected *.wav

in the file associations box.

2. Deleted all user profiles in the control panel

3. Changed all the ntuser.man to ntuser.dat in the user profiles

4. Logged on as the user. Changed the file association for *.wav (I had to

by right clicking on a *.wav file and using browse to associate the sound

recorder with the file type; I set "Always Use")

5. Logged off

6. Changed ntuser.dat to ntuser.man

7. Logged back in; File type does not have any association.

HELP!!!

Re: *.wav File Type - Can't Set to Sndrec32 for Terminal Server Users

I have done some more experimentation. If I delete the mandatory profile,

and change the ntuser.man to ntuser.dat, I can change the file type

association and it is persistent. I can log on and off repeatedly and the

association sticks. However, if I change the ntuser.dat to ntuser.man,

after I logon the 2nd time, the association is gone.

HELP!!!

Re: *.wav File Type - Can't Set to Sndrec32 for Terminal Server Users

I have a solution:

1. Delete the mandatory profile for the user account (Control Panel /

System / Advance / User Profiles)

2. Change ntuser.man to ntuser.dat

3. Temporarily add the User Account to the Administrators Group

4. Log in to the User Account

5. Run Windows Media Player. Make sure that *.wav files are NOT selected.

6. Open a folder in Windows Explorer. Change the file type program

association for *.wav files to c:\Windows\System32\sndrec32.exe.

7. Log Off

8. Change ntuser.dat to ntuser.man

9. Delete the user account from the administrators group

The *.wav file association should now stick when you log in using the

mandatory profile.
