ntoskrnl missing - what shall I actually type?

Recommended Posts

My pc says ntoskrnl.exe is missing or corrupted.

When in Recovery console it shows

1/ D:\MiniNT

2/ D:\I386

3/ C:\Windows

I pick choice 3 and get thru the password and rename ntoskrnl.exe to

ntoskrnl old

and I am now at c:\Windows\System32>

next the instructions says:

Copy ntoskrnl.exe to C:\WINDOWS\system32 from C:\WINDOWS\system32\dllcache

may I know what must I type in? Hope someone will response as I am stuck

here at the moment, Many thanks and regards

For the benefit of others who find themselves in the same

predicament it would be helpful if you posted ***how***

you sorted it out.

Re: ntoskrnl missing - what shall I actually type?

I slave this 'troubled' hdd and paste a copy of the 'ntoskrnl.exe' from the

'master' pc. Frankly I would like to do the 'correct' way as posted but

after spending a fair bit of time, I took the easy route. Many thansk for

your help

Re: ntoskrnl missing - what shall I actually type?

That was a good way to solve the problem. Here are two

similar ways that can be used for laptops:

- Boot the machine into Recovery Console mode, using your

WinXP CD, and copy the file.

- Boot the machine with a Bart PE boot CD (http://www.bootdisk.com)

and copy the file.

Unfortunately, in most cases the file ntoskrnl.exe is actually

present all along and the problem lies somewhere else, in

spite of the message.
