Looking for a new camera

I'm looking for a new camera.

 

Features I like are

A) View Finder

B) Li-Ion Battery

C) Good Zoom

 

And good picture quality of course.

 

Are the Digital SLR cameras really worth the huge price increase over a 'normal' digital camera?

 

I was looking at the Kodak Z712*, I'm not a great photographer, but I like to be able to take good quality pictures.

 

What I am worried about is that this camera is only 7.1 megapixels, so doesn't that my current 10 MP digital camera will take better pictures, even though this is an SLR?
