Hi, my Mum got a 2nd hand laptop for Xmas a NEC M320 which has worked well up until yesterday. It runs on Windows XP. She asked me to get her laptop onto a wireless network and to do so I got all the necessary things, Router, Lynksis card adapter and everything was going fine until I tried to run a new version of AOL. The programme got half way through installing and then vertical lines appeared all over the screen and the laptop switched off. I turned it back on and only the power light and battery light came on, no lights for hard drive and the fan did not activate. I switched it off and on again and still no sign of life apart from only the power light this time.

I am at my wits end, I'm not in the least way IT technical and don't know what to do. Is the laptop now broke and passed rememption, or have does anyone have a miracle solution for me?

Any help will be much appreciated and will get me out of the dog house.

Thanks

Hi, its sounds like a hardware fault, rather than a fault caused by the AOL install.

Disconnect the power adapter, remove all your adapter cards, remove the battery.

Press the power button and hold it for about 20 seconds, let go.

Plug in the mains adapter only, leave the battery out, and don't plug any other cards in.

Press the power button, and see if it will start. If it does, either the battery or your wireless card is seriously faulty. If it does not, it is most likely something internal at fault.

Hi,

thanks for the advice, I'll try that and see what happens, if it is a hardware fault would it be worth getting it repaired or save for a new laptop, or would it depend on the fault. Sorry for being a pest it's so I can advise my mam.

Thanks
