If you mean Windows Defender, that is a free spyware tool, it isn't

anti-virus software.

http://www.microsoft.com/protect/products/computer/default.mspx

If you mean Windows live OneCare, being a supposedly fully

functioning security suite:

http://www.microsoft.com/protect/products/computer/onecare.mspx

It ain't free and there are plenty of free alternatives:

http://antivirus.about.com/

And MS security software dosen't make the top ten in comparisions:

And I have yet to see the two Microsoft ranked above the free ones.

The free Avira AntiVir does indeed out rank OneCare.

Albeit Onecare seems to do very well on the ZLob family of Trojans but that's about it.

According to the list, AVG standard registration is 2 years. FWIW, I just

got it, and there is an additional charge for the second year. Here's a quote

from an e-receipt from AVG:

"On 18-JAN-2008, you bought the following products from GRISOFT LIMITED and

paid for them by credit card:

AVG Internet Security 1 license (1 year)

Backup CD - AVG"

Second computer coverage is another surcharge.

It was for two years, but it looks like business decisions have changed that. You still can get a

two year subscription, it just costs more.
