Windows Genuine Advantage Notification

A message popped up yesterday saying “You may be a victim of software piracy”

which I ignored because I know my windows is genuine. When I restarted my

computer today the message came up again in the windows startup screen before

windows finish loading and asked if I wanted to resolve this issue. I

selected no and windows finished loading then restarted my computer. It did

this several times until I selected resolve now then windows finished loading

and started explorer. It took me to Microsoft but I really didn’t want to

mess with it at the time so I closed the page. When I did so my computer

froze. I left it a while to see if it would fix but after 20 mins it still

was frozen so I tried to restart. Now my computer won’t boot up. The power

comes on but there is no beep and no display. I fear Microsoft screwed me!

I bought my computer new from a computer store and it has the genuine

windows xp home edition hologram sticker on the back with my serial number. I

tried using Microsoft support but they as for my product identification

number buy going to start, control panel, performance and maintenance, and

click on system under the general tab. Which I can’t do so I tried putting in

my serial number and it says invalid. On top of that they want to charge me!

Need help please.

RE: Windows Genuine Advantage Notification

Do you have an install CD? if not you need to get one! it appears you have

a volume license (not sure), can you take the pc back to where you bought it

and have them repair it?

Your first course of action should be to contact the store that sold you that

computer and seek their assistance in fixing the problem. Having a sticker on

the back of your computer indicates that you have an OEM copy of Windows XP.

That means that the computer manufacturer, or system builder, is responsible

when it comes to providing support for any issues related to the operating

system. The bottom line is that Microsoft does not provide support for OEM

copies of Windows.

That said, the fact that your computer won't start is a hardware problem. Issues

with product activation will not prevent your computer from at least starting

the boot process. It's possible that the warnings you received yesterday were

the first symptoms of a hardware problem.

If you still feel this is a problem with WGA, you might want to post your

question to this forum.

Some have posted a problem similar to yours. What you are seeing is NOT the

normal behavior of WGA.

Best guess is a hardware failure or a malovelent virus - certainly not a

Micros~1 problem.

If you can mount your hard drive in another machine, your first priority

should be to Hoover up all your precious data and get them far, far away

from the iniquities of the computer.

Next priority should be to create restore disks from the "restore" partition

(if the drive has one).

THEN you can start to run diagnostics and fixes for the drive.

Don't be dicking with the drive, trying this and trying that, until you get

your stuff off the problematic drive.

I fear that the computer store screwed you. Take it back.
