Full NTBackup Monday and incremental rest of week

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I assume that NTBackup is ok and rugged enough (since it has been around

for ages) to restore backed up drives and system state correctly to new

drives?

We want to use NTBackup to make a new full backup on Sundays and for the

consequtive workdays of the week, make smaller incremental backup files

which can be combined into the full backup file if a restore is needed.

- Or, will the incremental backup data always have to be copied

into/onto the huge full-backup file..?

What would NTBackup's command line look like if we want a FULL backup to

be taken on Sunday:

Backup source: C:\ E:\ <system state>

Backup Target: K:\Sunday-fullbackup.bkf

.... and what would the commandline be for an INCREMENTAL backup on

Monday night:

Backup source: C:\ E:\ <system state>

Comparative main file: K:\Sunday-fullbackup.bkf

Separate incremental Backup Target (if possible): K:\Monday_incr-backup.bkf

Thanks for comments and tips on this issue

regards

jake

In addition to Meinolf's advice, I personally think it's unwise to do

anything but full backups nightly if you have sufficient time/media to do

it. Disaster recovery with multiple incremental backups is a nightmare. And

if you're using W2003 with volume shadow services, the only real reason you

should *need* backups is for DR purposes. Just my $.02.
