Guest Chris White Posted March 10, 2008 Posted March 10, 2008 Having a real real nightmare with this now. My backups just wont run on my Windows 2003 R2 SP2 server. I go to create a normal backup using the wizard on NTBackup, then when I set it to run it just hangs on "Preparing Shadow Copy", hangs the NTBackup app, cranks the processor to 50% and thats it. I had a real issue the other day when 5 backup schedules all did this during a day and ramped the processor to 100% for hours. I've tried searching the net for solutions to this but its hard due to the nature of the error. Logs are empty in the backup logs, Event Viewer shows the Backup "Begin" event then nothing. Scheduled task viewer hasn't had errors in there for a while because I'm trying to solve the problem from the wizard not the sched tasks. I just dont know what to do now. The Volume Shadow service seems to be the culprit but I need Shadow Copy to backup open files. The service is set to manual and stopped when i checked services. So i assume it just gets called for when backup time comes. This is my main file server and with no backups going on - i'm worried as you can imagine. My only other solution is to use NTBackup from the Storage server and pull data back but that seems to take longer than it did to push backups from the file server. Any help is really appreciated - I'm in a dangerous situation at the moment. Cheers. -- Chris White United Kingdom

Guest Chris White Posted March 11, 2008 Posted March 11, 2008 Re: NTBackup Hangs at Shadow Copy Hi there, Tried your recommendations but it didn't work. The errors displayed at the top of this help sheet aren't related to my problem. I did hear that sometimes if the registry entry for "FilesNotToBackup" is too full of entries then it can cause Shadow Copy problems in Backup. There are a lot of entries in here because there are lots of DFS Shares hosted on this server. Obviously I cant remove this entries because they are related to the DFS Infrastructure and mean that the Backup doesn't backup all the DFS config files in each share (as it should). At the moment I can only backup the server from other R2 SP2 servers on the network. But can't push backups from this server. As i said, this server has the most DFS shares hosted on it, so perhaps thats why, due to the Registry entry being full per the above paragraph. Funnily enough I restarted this server (at midnight) a while ago, and it solved the problem temporarily. Then it started again. God only knows why. But having searched throughout the Internet, a lot of people are having problems with NTBackup hanging on the "Preparing to Shadow Copy" section. No solutions found yet though. A nasty bug that just had to bite me in the backside on the main file server. Guest lforbes Posted March 15, 2008 Posted March 15, 2008 Re: NTBackup Hangs at Shadow Copy Hi, I had this with my Shadow Copy service as well as my NTBackup Service. It got solved when I installed this patch (below) on ALL my servers. Apparently SP2 creates a LOT of problems including this one. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/936594 http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=50A878A3-EC91-40FC-BA6F-BB5C9982AED8&displaylang=en Have you tried enabling Shadow Copies on the drives and seeing if you can or if it errors out? Guest Chris White Posted March 17, 2008 Posted March 17, 2008 Re: NTBackup Hangs at Shadow Copy Hey buddy, Thanks so much for the reply. I have run the Hotfix but will need to wait till tonight to restart the Server and see if it has patched the hole. In terms of Volume Shadow Copies, they seemed to work ok last time I tried it but at the moment this is the main file server and I had Disk I/O issues due to so many changes occuring on the file server (Part of a DFS-Replica Set). We are currently planning to install additional file servers for different departments to reduce disk I/O loading. -- Chris White United Kingdom "lforbes" wrote: > Hi, > > I had this with my Shadow Copy service as well as my NTBackup Service. > > It got solved when I installed this patch (below) on ALL my servers. > > Apparently SP2 creates a LOT of problems including this one. > > http://support.microsoft.com/kb/936594 > http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=50A878A3-EC91-40FC-BA6F-BB5C9982AED8&displaylang=en > > Have you tried enabling Shadow Copies on the drives and seeing if you can or > if it errors out? > > > "Chris White" wrote: > > > Hi there, > > > > Tried your recommendations but it didn't work. > > > > The errors displayed at the top of this help sheet aren't related to my > > problem. > > > > I did hear that sometimes if the registry entry for "FilesNotToBackup" is > > too full of entries then it can cause Shadow Copy problems in Backup. Guest lforbes Posted March 18, 2008 Posted March 18, 2008 Re: NTBackup Hangs at Shadow Copy Sure, Let me know if it works. Guest Chris White Posted March 25, 2008 Posted March 25, 2008 Re: NTBackup Hangs at Shadow Copy The patch didn't solve the problem! However, I deleted the DFS entries from the following registry folder and it worked again. I read somewhere that too many entries in the "FilesNotToBackup" Registry container can cause VSS to hang. Reg key: - HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\BackupRestore\FilesNotToBackup All working again now! -- Chris White United Kingdom "lforbes" wrote: > Sure, > > Let me know if it works.
