Decommissioning server

Recommended Posts

I have a very "old" server in our domain. This was the first DC in our

Windows 2003 AD implementation. I've setup a new server which is now an

additional DC. I'd like to change server rolls between these two servers.

Is there a tool I can use? Can anyone direct me to a msft article?

Thanks All!

Re: Decommissioning server

Hello Chris,

- make the new server GLobal catalog server, open Active directory Sites

and Services and then double-click sitename, double-click Servers, click

your domain controller, right-click NTDS Settings, and then click Properties,

on the General tab, click to select the Global catalog check box (http://support.microsoft.com/?id=313994)

- Transfer, NOT seize the 5 FSMO roles to the new Domain controller (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/324801)

- also make the new one DNS server and reconfigure your clients to use it

for DNS

- if you have Exchange running check in Exchange system manager the Recipients

update service for the correct domain controller.

Best regards

Thanks Meinolf!

How can force the DCs to sync so know everything was moved correctly?

Thanks,

Hello Chris,

With dcdiag and netdiag and replmon you can check replication and status

from the DC's. If not installed use the installation cd and browse to the

support tools and install them.

Also you will find in the Event viewer under Directory services for every

change of the roles and the Global catalog an entry if it was succesful.

Best regards

Support tools are upgraded in the Service Packs and you should install the

version that matches the server installation - which maybe the same, but may

not.
