Printers going offline

Printers that have worked for a couple of years or more are now suddenly and

for no reason going offline. With one printer, if I killed everything in

the queue, then powered it off and on, it would come back to online status.

The other will not. The info panel on the printer says it is ready, but

client machines and the server all show it offline. Print jobs fill the

queue but won't print.

What else can I try?

Already have SP2 installed? You'll need to install this hotfix:

http://support.microsoft.com/KB/946198

It, for whatever reason, didn't make it into SP2. We had this exact

issue and it fixed it. Be sure to note the registry tweaks that

coincide with the hotfix.

You may also want to be aware of this hotfix as well:

Re: Printers going offline

One of the options was:

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, disable SNMP on the printer port. (instructions

included)

This worked!

Thanks

Yes, I know, but you lose SNMP monitoring capabilities. It's a bandage

fix.

I have to admit I have no idea what SNMP monitoring capabilities are. Can

you explain this?
