Disable sub-pixel hinting?

I really like the font smoothing provided in Windows XP, with one

exception...

Windows does sub-pixel hinting - uses the red or blue pixel to create a "1/3

pixel".

While this is OK most of the time, sometimes I will get extreme color

artifacting around smoothed fonts. The characters may correct themselves if

I select the area, or minize/restore the window, but it's annoying to seel.

Also, my monitors rotate. Sub pixel hinting makes font smoothing absolutely

horrible on a rotated monitor.

I've check the normal places for a sub-pixel setting, and ran the MS

Cleartype tuner, but still no joy.

Is there a registry entry, or third party app, or some other means to keep

font smoothing WITHOUT sub-pixel hinting?

I should clarify a bit...

Is the color artifacting a bug in XP or video drivers (Latest nVidia for

6800GS)? Can this be corrected?

Again, is there a way to tell Windows that I've rotated the display and that

it should smooth vertically instead of horizontally?
