Hi folks,

I have a couple of questions I hope someone can help me debug. I have a

user in a remote office running Vista Business and connecting via RDP to a TS

server at our main office. She has a Dell 1720dn printer installed locally

that prints fine. However, when she connects to the TS, she isn't seeing her

local printer as an option to print to. She sees other printers not located

in her office, but not the one on her desk. I have 3 other users at this

location, all with a 1720dn on their desktops and they can print via TS just

fine. Any ideas why that printer isn't showing up for this one user?

Also, I'm having a little trouble with RDP on Vista. It defaults to putting

in the IP address of the TS in front of the user name when it tries to

connect (i.e. 192.168.1.1\username) and I have to wait for it to fail before

erasing that out, putting in just the username and connecting. I would like

to eliminate the error from occurring for the remote users, but haven't

figured out how yet. When I try to use other credentials, it still seems to

try the IP\username first.

Thanks,

Mike

Re: Printer and RDP issue

In the RDP client options | Local Resources does she have Printers checked

under the Local Devices and Resources section?

Re: Printer and RDP issue

The printer problem is most likely caused by a missing printer

driver on the server. Check the EventLog on the TS to verify this.

Do *not* install the Dell printer driver on the Terminal Server.

Unfortunately, most Dell drivers are known to be TS-incompatible.

In stead, map the printer to a native driver by creating a custom

ntprintsubs.inf file, as described in KB article 239088:

239088 - Windows 2000 or Windows Server 2003 Terminal Services

server logs events 1111, 1105, and 1106

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=239088

Dell printers are rebranded Lexmark printers, so you might try a

native generic Lexmark driver.

Re: Printer and RDP issue

Thanks for the reply. I probably didn't say this clearly enough, but I have

three other users in remote offices with Dell 1720dn's who are all able to

successfully print in the same way. It's part of the reason I got that same

printer for this user. So I have users successfully doing the same thing

with the same printer.

That's why I'm stumped as to why this isn't working.
