files will not delete/erase

I have several files/directories that I cannot delete. After exhausting all

that I have learned over the past 30 years I have spent three days searching

the web for a program (free) that will force delete them. Can someone help me

with this problem?

Thanks

What files in what location? What happens when you try to delete them? What

have you tried that has "exhausted all you have learned"?

You need to report what happens when you attempt to

delete them. Remember - we can't see your screen!

You will need to list out the folders and files that you want to

delete. Also, you need to know that several files / folders stored

under C:\Windows are part of the list pf protected files in Windows

XP. That is to say, if XP finds any of these files / folder missing,

it will automatcially "restore" them.

I use the freeware program unlocker, found at;

http://ccollomb.free.fr/unlocker/

It works very well and has a simple interface. The only thing to be

wary of is to look at what processes Unlocker says is using the file.

If it has to kill the process, you may lose control of your computer

and have to reboot in order to regain control of the machine.

Below is alist of the files and the complete path to each file. The error

message I get depends on the delete method I am using and the file I am

trying to delete at the time. This was brought about by one of my Grandsons

tried to restore his work while I was away. Not knowing exactly what he was

doing he somehow restored the complete system into the skype directory. In

trying to get the skype directory clean I ran into this problem. Corruptskype

is the skype directory renamed. I have a Grandson teaching English in S.

Korea and he requested that I get skype for communication with him. I had ti

rename skype so I could restore the skype because he was expecting me to be

on line later that day.

I have tried every method of delete in Windows XP Pro and every method of

dos delete/erase and the utility program unlocker with no luck from any of

them.

It seems that one gentleman questioned what I have learned the past 30

years, so this is for him. The 30 years was spent on micros and minis. I

actually started in the computer field in 1961 when all we had was punch

cards for programs and data to qork with. Therefore I watch computers grow up

from the inside. I have done everything in the field from service to my own

business which I sold in 1998 after I had retired. I developed an accounting

package and supported it for one company I was with. Then when they went

under they were kind enough to pass the rights to the software package and

the support on to me. I had a litle over 4200 customers nationwide softwar

and hardware wise. Do not think I am wise ass because I am really not, but I

will match my experience and knowledge gained since 1961 with you any time.

I have tried every method of delete in Windows XP Pro and every method of

dos delete/erase and the utility program unlocker with no luck from any of

them.

There is no need to send the same reply to each respondent -

we can see all of them anyway. Here is what I would do for

starters:

1. Back up all important files to an independent medium, in

case something goes wrong.

2. Click Start / Run / cmd to open a Command Prompt which

you tend to call "DOS", although it has little in common with

this ancient operating system.

3. Type the following command:

chkdsk c: /f

4. Reboot into Safe Mode.

5. Start another Command Prompt.

6. Type these commands:

cd /d "C:\Program Files" {Enter}

rd /s Corr {Tab} (Yes, Tab, not Enter!)

7. When you see "CorruptSkype", press Enter.

8. Report what you see on the screen.

Note that Step 7 will delete the corrupted Skype

folder (if successful), with no chance of recovery.

Peqasus, the last doutine sent down did not get rid of them either.

Gentlemen, I want to thank you, and it was greatly appreciated, for the

effort expended on this problem. I have the system backed up with those

files excluded. Now all I have to do is re-format drive C: Then restore the

system nd these files wiil be gone. I was trying to avoid having to format a

500GB drive. But, since I will be out this weekend I wiil start the format

and restore before I leave for the weekend.

Thanks Gentlemen. Much appreciated.

A "quick format" is all that is needed

Have you run a chkdsk? If the directory entries have become corrupted

(not the files, the entries in the directory), that could cause the

type of problem you are describing.
