How to stop Check Disk running automatically?

If I start up my computer when I have a USB drive connected,

maybe half the time check disk starts running automatically

to check the USB drive. I can stop it if I catch it in time,

but often times I'll hit the power button and leave the room

for a while. When I get back, ready to use the computer, I

have to wait for check disk to finish.

I don't want it even to attempt to run automatically. Is

there a way I can put a stop to it? If so, how?

Thanks.

Windows XP only runs chkdsk on it IF you were mean to the drive and shut

it off with writes pending. DON'T do that! And chkdsk won't have to

clean up after you.

I didn't think that I had been doing that, but I'll pay

closer attention in the future.

Thanks.
