Well it wasn't the funniest at the time but afterwards it made me smile with satisfaction.

I sorted out a few minor problems for a fairly well off family, including installing a piece of software to prevent a 7 year old changing all of the Desktop settings.

Two or three days later I received a phone call from the Dad saying there was lots of adult popups appearing on his computer. Did I install a program that caused the problem I was asked. Was it possible my CD was infected? The popups he said were disgusting, hmmm.

You can probably imagine what I was thinking, I scanned all of my systems to make sure I was ok and made an appointment to go back to see him. First thing I did was check his Internet history - that said it all.

He was stomping around his bedroom tinkering with his phone so I set his history to show as thumbnails and called him over. Embarrassment over with I said I was charging for the call out and could clean it up for him.

Paid and out the front door, I was happy.

His nickname became "Mr Disgusting" :)

I've got a million of them. :) The thing about this thread though is that I'm afraid we may come off looking elitest. We have a lot of inexperienced members who might be doing the same things. I wouldn't want them to think we make fun of them even though we don't.

On a related matter the funniest thing is what I myself did. I still tell that story to this day. I won't tell it here but it just proves that we all can be in such a position.

Sometimes it can be funny to think back on some of the odd things you may have done to at least get things working till the proper spares or facilities are available.

As a for instance, my car had been stolen from outside my house in the middle of the night, it was a rustbucket, and had been taken just for some possibly drunk ***** to get home. Once nearby, dumped it on a pub car park, then stripped it of valuables, like cassette player and radio, also the small sports steering wheel.

So when the police finally told me where it had been found, I went to look in the hope I could get it home at least.

After wiping all the finger print dust off everything, I was amazed to find my tool box had been left. So out came the mole grips, clamped them firmly on the steering column where the steering wheel should be, and drove it home, steering it with the mole grips like a sailing boat tiller.

The latest callamity is the start button on the front cover of my desktop has broken, and then jammed. So the cover is now off, and the little tiny peg the button works on is now my means of running or starting this thing up till I can sort something proper out.

I have also done many bodged jobs, just to get up and running again. Brass bushes to replace a proper ball bearing in my heating boiler fume exhaust fan.

A small washer under one of the push rods to open the inlet valve on an older OHV engine in one of my older cars when the rocker arm broke.

I sometimes wonder why I haven't blown myself up.

the funniest ive done was to impress a girl by helping her fit a new harddisk (with my limited limited experience). It had been a while since i had upgraded anything and was sat chatting away Voila plugged in - rebooting and sat flirting away.

Id forgot to change the jumpers and heard a huge crackle as it left a scorch mark across the top of her brand new seagate lol I didnt get anywhere with that one although i managed to get my mate to sort her 'problematic' system out

I've driven a 12 mile round trip to push a connector back together, when I asked for £25 for my petrol and time they objected saying that they could have done that if they had known, I pointed out that if they "had of known" I would be in the pub probably on my second pint by now, not dicussing the in's and out's of charging £25 to drive 12 Mile to push a connector back together for free.

I have one guy that pays me a flat fee however long it takes per pc he has had a multitude of problems in the past all because he wants " to know how it works " eventually after 4 visits in 5 days to sort him out I got him a very old system for him to mess with so he didnt break his main pc and lo and behold he still manages it to this day

The funniest thing I ever did was trying to install microsoft on the computer and reading a 4 in the key code as an A.....No joke it took me like 40 retries before I realized my mistake...due to it one of my ex friends at the time told me that I wasn't fit to own a computer....

Now if we change that to Daftest mistake, I once phoned a friend to see if he had a spare PS2 keyboard, as my USB one wouldn't work till windows started. and so I couldn't use the Boot from CD option.

He asked was it set in the Bios to be supported in the Bios or the OS?

Guess what the answer was :o
