browser choice

microsoft has installed a new window to my desktop called browser choice.

 

I haven't opened it yet, I have googled it and discovered that it is a safe legal requirement from microsoft to satisfy european laws.

 

I have gained the opinion that it isn't wellthought out and that it forces you to load/delete existing browsers.

 

I am currently running IE8 andam quite happy with it.

 

What are yourthoughts and how I should proceed ?

 

If i choose to keep IE8 how to I rid myself of this folder? I am unsure about opening it due to the poor reviews I have read which suggest that thing's will not be the same afterwards.

 

If I do open it and run is firefox or safari for example a better (safer) environment than IE8?

as far as browser security goes the simpler the better, so Opera and Safari (Also not being so popular) have to win for security)

 

IE8 being the most popular will also be the most highly targeted, and what you gain with Firefox, being "More Secure" you can loose with the addition of plug in's and customization options, also with google chrome you suffer the same pluses and minuses.

 

So in my Opinion it's not so much the Browser you use but how you use the browser you choose!!

So If you want to change from IE8 or just Install another browser because you can you click on the desktop short cut you have currently on your desktop, If you want to stay with IE8 and have no interest in using the others right click on it and select delete.

Thank you, this tells me everything I wanted to know.

I wasn't sure that simply deleting it from the desktop would be a final solution, however you have answered my question perfectlly, thanks.

To me it's a case of bureauprats strike again, I've Used Firefox as the default Browser for years, But I also have Chrome installed and keep IE8 around as well, Every know and again I find that there is a site with a Glitch in the coding and won't load properly.

 

or I get someone ask about how to do something in a browser and it's useful to be able to have a quick look, as to remember everything would be nigh on impossible for the average person.

 

So this has been a subject I have been keeping my eye on, as I had concerns that the result could be that you could only have one browser installed which would have been a pain.

 

Thankfully that's not the case, It would seem the biggest change is the choice of being able to uninstal IE8, if I understand everything right.

I use Opera, Firefox & very occasionally IE8. I think Opera & Firefox are quicker to run/load web pages as well as being safer. Opera has built in torrent downloader - if you are into that thing!

Unfortunatley not all web site support these browsers & favour IE8, for this reason I keep IE8 (on-line banking for example!)

 

Good luck - there's no harm in trying something different than IE 8!!

The big problem i have with IE is that it's a case of WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get).

Other browsers can be customized into looking like you want it to ... or doing what you want it to.

Some of the addons for Firefox are a godsend in my job.

IE will always be targeted by the malware guys, simply because they don't like Microsoft. But if it's kept up to date with all the MS updates, it should be ok.

 

Firefox was the preferred browser for a long time, but that now is being targeted.... by the 'Goored' malware.

That said, it's still my preferred browser.

For added security, add the NoScript extension to this browser:

Allow active content to run only from sites you trust, and protect yourself against XSS and Clickjacking attacks.

 

also consider adding:

Opera is also an excellent choice.

I have all 3 of these installed.

Some sites work better in different browsers.

I use the WOT which is good as it gives some warning about risky sites before you go there.

I also have Zonealarm pro firewall and the browser plug in is also useful

But the winner has to be Avast as it always seems to be the first to the mark when clicking on a risky site.

My default Browser has always been Opera.

I have just installed Opera 10.5. I think still in Beta.

Touted to be the Worlds fastest Browser.

Definately fast.

I also use WOT.

I have tried a lot of AV'S,however Avira is my choice.

It hasn't let me down,to date.
