Try getting your insurance company to cover theft if they find out you were

robbed when you haven't been taking the most basic precautions, like leaving

your car/house doors unlocked while you're away.

 

In other words, yeah, you can argue it's still theft, but the owner still

bears some responsibility and you'll get very little sympathy.
