Windows installer error

I have a Windows 2003 x64 with SP2 installed that has recently become

unable to run the windows installer. So far I have found 2

applications that cause the following error to display:

"The Windows Installer Service could not be accessed. This can occur

if you are running Windows in safe mode, or if the Windows Installer

is not correctly installed. Contact your support personnel for

assistance."

 

I have tried to follow the MS KB steps to uninstall and reinstall the

installer, but the only Windows Installer download that I can find for

x64 Windows is for pre-SP2 and I get an error when I try to run it.

 

What to do?
