Guest Thomas T Posted March 13, 2008 Posted March 13, 2008 A 2003 x64 server provides since last patch tuesday no net functionality anymore. Error: All services run No entries in the event log Ping to the server goes No RDP No "Net View" .... KB948496 patch has been installed. After uninstalling the patch everything was fine again. This patch probably at least for some x64 machines is not recommended. In my case this is a HP385 G2, AMD64
Guest Pat B Posted March 17, 2008 Posted March 17, 2008 RE: KB948496, 2003 x64 server stops net functions I got the same problem with an HP DL380 G5... -- Pat B "Thomas T" wrote: > A 2003 x64 server provides since last patch tuesday no net functionality > anymore. > > Error: > > All services run > No entries in the event log > Ping to the server goes > No RDP > No "Net View" > ... > > KB948496 patch has been installed. Guest Pat B Posted March 18, 2008 Posted March 18, 2008 RE: KB948496, 2003 x64 server stops net functions No, I don't talk to any one... I just uninstall the update and I block it from future installation. I will try to talk with someone from HP today. -- Pat B "Thomas T" wrote: > Have you talked to microsoft or to hewlett packard about this. Guest Thomas T Posted March 19, 2008 Posted March 19, 2008 RE: KB948496, 2003 x64 server stops net functions Yesterday I found a thread in the HP Business Support Forums. There they say that it is the Broadcom NIC driver in some of the newer HP Servers. One guy got a ftp link in order to fetch a driver that is not yet downloadable via http://www.hp..... Guest AussieBob Posted March 20, 2008 Posted March 20, 2008 RE: KB948496, 2003 x64 server stops net functions I had the same problem. HP servers but the OS is standard 32 bit 2003 SP2 Uninstalled and all OK again "Thomas T" wrote: > A 2003 x64 server provides since last patch tuesday no net functionality > anymore. > > Error: > > All services run > No entries in the event log > Ping to the server goes > No RDP > No "Net View" > ... > > KB948496 patch has been installed. Guest Thomas T Posted March 31, 2008 Posted March 31, 2008 RE: KB948496, 2003 x64 server stops net functions Now I have asked HP if thy are aware of the problem and when there will be a new driver for the NC373i. Guest tmhalligan@gmail.com Posted April 12, 2008 Posted April 12, 2008 Re: KB948496, 2003 x64 server stops net functions Issue is related with the SNP that came with 2003 SP2 You do not need to uninstall SP2 to fix To fix perform the following Change the following registry key values to "0" and reboot HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters EnableRSS == 0 EnableTCPA == 0 Enabletcpchimney == 0 The issue is the Broadcom drivers for the HP NC373i adapters (Among others) HP has released updated drivers but they do not always work. Guest Thomas T Posted April 14, 2008 Posted April 14, 2008 Re: KB948496, 2003 x64 server stops net functions Hi, as I said in my post from 3/19/2008 "... found a thread in the HP Business Support Forums. There they say that it is the Broadcom NIC driver in some of the newer HP ..." Ok, you found that thread. But what remains for me is that I am still not sure about a save way to fix this issue. In the thread there is said that implementing KB948496 will help. For me with this patch the trouble began. In my > > > > > case this is a HP385 G2, AMD64 Where I work we have a number of HP systems that have been affected by this issue, so I have been following this issue for a while. We were updating the Drivers with the versions released around 12/18/2007 but have had inconsistent results and instead have since been disabling the relevant registry entries that I mentioned. We did not apply the patch so I can't speak to that. This has largely worked but there have been apparently some instances where the problem reasserts itself. I think there has been yet another updated driver released, although I am not sure as I am on the periphery of the troubleshooting of this issue at this time. The one change that has resolved this issue permanently in every posting I have read is to replace the adapters with those based on an Intel chipset (NC110T I think), for a number of reasons we are not going this route. I believe that if you pester HP long enough they may ship them to you. The best results, short of replacing the card, are disabling the advanced features in the registry and the adapter properties. Good luck
